Member Interview #21

A little about yourself:
I’m Raith, and that’s pronounced like its written, not ‘wrath’ as some people persist in calling me. I’m from (and remain in) Christchurch down in the NZ. I’m a squad leader for the Raptors, and you will have probably heard me spamming up the TS channel as I compulsively keep my team on mission.

I’m 26, which makes me on the young side of most TOGger’s. But I pay attention, and thus age quickly.

Family? Sons/Daughters?
Most of my family is in the old country (UK), only my immediate family is here in NZ but being part of a family business I see a lot of them. An arrangement both good and abjectly frustrating frustrating on any given day of the week. I have a partner of five years who lives with me and is by far my better half.

Day Job? Night Job? What do you do?
The family business of which I am part is primarily a geopetrological laboratory. The lab conducts the optical analysis of all of the coal that is mined in New Zealand and exported.

Favourite pastime outside of gaming?
I fence both modern Olympic epee and re-enactment style medieval rapier. I’m also an amateur free-runner and brew some rather good beer.

Your having Dinner tonight and have 3 Guests (alive or Dead) to invite, Who are they and why?

2-David Attenborough
3-Douglas Laing

Aristotle and Attenborough should speak for themselves. Aristotle is a primeval father of scientific method and rational thought, two things I make a lot of use of. Attenborough tought me (through endless television documentaries) more of what I know about the world than any other single individual. Douglas Laing would bring some very good scotch whiskey to the table, and god damn I like scotch whiskey.

If you could have one thing in this world, what would it be?
The ability to purge the Earth of religious and cultural doctrine, in all its forms.

Gaming Highlights/Lowlights:

A highlight would be first playing Battlefield 2142, and experiencing something genuinely new and great. Lowlight would be the last few years, staring down the terrible consolidation of the gaming market, and watching new games and old series dummed down and taken away from the PC. It is a savage irony that as the gaming population grows older, so many games are pitched at an ever more juvenile and stupid console market.

How long have you been a TOG?
Only about five months.

Other games you play apart from BC2?
I’m primarily a Battlefield Bad Company 2 player but I’m also known to play a bit of Dawn of War 2, to keep the RTS regions of my mind active (anything you heard about space elf fancying is just a vicious rumor). I also tend to keep up with any good single player title.

How long have you been playing BC2?
Since open Beta.

Favourite kit?

Favourite Weapon?
Sniper Rifle (any). I only snipe when my other abilities are not required, but I do truly love the craft of the shot. The pure focus of calculating the range of a shot, the drop of a bullet, the movement and behaviour of target; that is one of the few things in the world that I can devote the sum resources of my mind towards in their entirety. It is a meditative activity.

Funniest BC2 Moment?
The chicken pun… If you weren’t on TS that particular evening, then for better or worse, you missed out.

Hardest Opponent?

No singular player gives me any particular trouble. But bringing my squad against the Griffons is something that I’ll always do with a measure of trepidation.

Easiest Opponent?
TOG Temeflaps: On one of this 50 meter knife missions. Imagine the scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail with Lancelot charging the castle.... “dun-dundun-dundundun-”

Dumbest BC2 moment?
Anything involving the quad-bike and trees: Oft referred to as ‘the reason we practice rollouts’. Also trying to repair tanks and rocketing them instead (a common accident, but compounded by the fact I am still capable of doing it after all these years playing Battlefield).

Game improvements, what would you like to see improved?

I’d like to see weapon sway/vibration when viewed down the scope. The static scope is unrealistic and too easy to use at range for many weapons. I’d also like the medic revive mechanic made slower and and more risky to pull off. The instant revive is too powerful in my opinion.
