Recently, TOG held a contest to give away 10 beta invitations for the upcoming
Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising MMORPG. The idea of this contest was to write a
short story about a specific G & H screen shot (pictured below) in 100 words or
less. Yes, a very short story. Many good entries were received and they were a
pleasure to read through.
The Older Gamers would now
like to present the first three winning entries. They are presented in no
particular order.
Enjoy!
Desalya was a very vain Gorgon. All she wanted is to be recognized for her
beauty but everyone who looked her way turned to stone. That's why she decided
to relocate to Rome's most popular photo op locale! Now she could sneak into
anyone's family photo at the last second, pose for the shot and after "taking
care" of everyone end up with a nice snapshot of herself. Who needs Perseus'
shield when she has Polaroid’s?
The small group of
heroes of Rome had spent days crossing the desert searching out the evil lair of
one of the most hideous creatures to cross the lands. Their senses had been
dulled by the long journey, tormenting sun, and endless ramblings of an overly
verbose scout. Now was their time! Now they were here! They would return to
Rome as lords among heroes for vanquishing the famed creature. All they had to
do was corner the feared snake headed creature known as Medusa before she knew
she was hunted… It is good that Rome breeds even more heroes.
Wonderful. Doesn't
anyone use caution anymore? The entrance to the temple ruins looked a bit too
clean to make it abandoned. The scattered bones, that I suggest that we check
out, didn't seem to be from wild animals. Even that lovely scout agreed with me
on that. And when the scraping noise started from around the corner, Mr.
I-can-kill-anything goes charging around it with the support staff right behind
him and poof, four fresh meat popsicles for a Medusa. Small mirrors are such
handy things. Oh well, maybe the next party will have brains.
The story: Heroes for the Empire
The City of Nepet awakes in fear,
several people were slaughtered and two children missing, they suspect
their enemy Medusa hunted the children to do a sacrifice, the citizens are
frightened, so they've sent a messenger in a horse to Rome to ask for
help, after listening to the story, Rome politicians conceded four warriors
with great skill to fight against the Medusa. The four warriors went to the
city of Nepet to know about the medusa location.
The citizens of nepet welcomed
them with great joy, the heroes asked where the creature lives, and discovered
that she was near the ancient ruins, a forbidden place with unknown dangers.
they traveled two days with little rest and found out the Medusa location. The
place had the smell of death, it was everywhere, the four warriors were very
alert to any strange sound, there was a strange silence, birds were silent,
even the wind stopped. they searched the ruins and found blood, they knew the
enemy could show up at any moment...
“Damn Medusa,”
Tiberia thought to herself after rolling away from a sweeping tail. She glances
at Servia just in time to see her fall to the monster. “These manacles better
work,” Tiberia mutters. Quickly she maneuvers herself behind the monster as it
pummels the gladiator Gaius. “Do something!” he yells. As the beast raises its
hand to crush him, Tiberia leaps. Catching a wrist in the air she latches a
restraint to it. Plunging to the ground Tiberia yanks the shackle chains pulling
Medusa down. Hastily she secures the other restraint. “Just another day,”
Tiberia says grinning at her prize.
Forming a tribe is not an easy
thing to do in a MMORPG. As we all gather on teamspeak and decide on a
place too meet, The female archer it trying to decide what color robe to wear.
What's it with females and the colors of there avatar clothes? After a long
discussion we decided to meet outside the the city and pay homage to the gods
before venturing off. Our tribe leader Decided to take a nice screenshot to
commemorate the big raid we are about to embark on. And away the tribe of
Phalanx went to Conquer there mission, at least till next time...
“Hah! Bent arrows?” Brutus
laughed as Nemia missed her target for the third time. “No. Every time the
breeze picks up my eyes burn. Go stand down wind.” Brutus winks. “That’s your
excuse? Hey Medusa! You hear this? Nemia says…” “Be Silent!” From behind the two
mercenaries, the intimidating figure of Medusa appears. Cato and Brena, the two
remaining members of the group, had been watching their associates’ contest with
amusement. At their employer’s sudden appearance, however, all four mercenaries
snapped erect, weapons ready.“Listen! They’re coming.”“Who?” Brena asked,
scanning the horizon. Medusa seems to shiver slightly. “Heroes…”
Stheno was almost shivering in
excitement. Ten years it’s been since she last defeated her sister Euryale. Ten
long years of her “pawns” being decimated by the barbarians her sister somehow
managed to acquire.
Instead of solitary champions this
year there was Lares, a gladiator from
Argos and his wife Thalia, their
daughter Alcestis, and her cousin Andra. All of them are skilled warriors from a
life growing up in the dangerous highlands.
The master stroke, Stheno
thought, was in the proper motivation. Not far behind where they stood is a reed
basket containing Andras infant son Jamid. They will not be fighting for riches
or power but for the survival of a tiny member of their own clan.
“It is my time now Euryale”
Hissss…
“Stop!”
Said Festus in a quiet voice that carried an urgent overtone with it. In his
many days as a boy on the banks of the Tiber playing with his friends and
yielding sticks freshly fallen from the local fig trees to his more recent
formal weapons training and studies at rhetoric school, to prepare for a life as
an orator, Festus knew he had a calling. Now that the calling had literally
snuck up behind him and his friends, he was fearful. He feared Failure.
“Faustina.
Be ready to duck when I say ‘now’ as the blade of my axe will becoming toward
you” Instructed Festus. “Now”…..
(Editors Note). This next one may not have
exactly fit the rules but we could not pass it up.
Four heroes they were,
valiant and proud,
They dared the cursed ruins,
to pierce the evil shroud.
The terrifying gorgons
did their utmost to detain,
but the four sallied forth
and had them quickly slain.
All save lovely Medusa,
who begged that they pause.
For she was not the evil,
there was another cause.
And now the four demanded
that Medusa show the way,
for she alone knew where
hid the monster they must slay.
The brave souls followed
Medusa up and down the stair
and now they shall bravely meet
the true enemy in his lair.
Names of the winners have been left out so that any NDA restrictions are not broken. Congratulations to those who wrote the above
entries! We hope you enjoyed participating in this contest.
