Ok now that you have your Wii, you must have Wii Sports. Don’t let the fact that it comes with the console fool you. To put it into context Wii sports is a game that’s easy to play and hard to master.
There are 5 games in Wii sports Tennis, Bowling, Baseball, Golf and Boxing.
There are also 2 training modes, Wii fitness and practice mode.
So after creating your Mii, you’re off to give it a try.
So let’s start with Tennis.
Wii Tennis.
There are 3 game modes, quick match, best of 3 and best of 5. All the matches are doubles matches, you can choose where you would like your player to be, and up to four people can play (as long as you have enough Wiimotes)
The game is fairly basic to grasp, swing the wiimote and the player swings the racquet. There are a couple of tricks though. For instance, serving is done by either hitting the “A” button or raising the wiimote. So it’s flick up the ball and swing the wiimote to hit it. Where the trick is if you manage to hit the ball right at the top of the throw, it will result in a power serve. These are quite hard to return, and often result in either an ace or the player simply hitting it out.
Other tricks include twisting the wiimote as you hit it to put spin on the ball.
Wii Bowling.
Now this is quite possibly one of the best games to play with friends. It’s funny to see how people end up doing the full bowling action when trying to master this one. It follows all the basic bowling rules. 10 frames per a game. The action is that of bowling a ball down the lane. Hold the wiimote in front of you, hold down the “B” button, and swing like your bowling, releasing the “B” button when you want to release the ball. Where the skill comes in is aiming to compensate for your swing. As any twisting or turning of the wiimote will result in putting spin on the ball or it just plain old ending up in the gutter.
Wii Baseball.
Now this is the tricky one to play, as its all about timing. There are only 3 innings to each match, with 3 outs per an innings. All the fielding and running between bases is taken care of, so it’s just the pitching and batting that you have to do.
Pitching is quite easy, you just swing the wiimote like your throwing the ball, holding down any of the buttons will cause it to curve, spin or slide. Moving the wiimote faster will result in a faster throw.
Batting is a trickier, as its all up to the timing and power of the swing to hit the ball. It seems you have to get it just right to hit a home run. Quite often your hits will be caught in the outfield or you will be run out.
Wii Golf.
Golf is an interesting one, it hasn’t taken my interest as much as the other games have. There seems to be a few small problems with it picking up your swing. Most of the time I just do an over head one and it seems to work. There are 4 options, easy holes, medium holes, difficult hole and the full 9 holes.
The holes gradually get harder as you play all 9 but none of them are overly hard.
Wii Boxing.
This one is done with the nun chuck. Wiimote in one hand and nun chuck in the other. All matches are 3 rounds or knock out. Whichever comes 1st. At 1st the game is fairly easy, but as your player gains skill the opponents do too. After about 5 or 6 matches, I was finding the game getting quite physical. You can do all the standard boxing moves, jab, uppercut, round house etc. You also hold the wiimote up above your face, to protect you from the opponent’s hits. You have a small “health circle” that’s divided into sections. Each hit will remove a section or two, until you have no more and you hit the canvas. Then its will depend on your stamina as to if you stand back up or not.
Wii Training.
Now this is where it get fun, each day you can do 3 training exercises from any of the games. They are automatically selected for you and there are no second chances. At the end of the 3 the Wii will calculate your age. The idea is to get as close to 20 as you can. 20 being the optimum age (but we know better than that) There are 40? Different training tasks that you can be, from some awesome bowling ones where you have to hit down 108? Pins in one go, to hitting targets with a golf ball. All the training tasks can be done in the practice sessions.
Over all Wiisports will keep you and your friends entertained for many an hour. It’s the kind of game you find yourself saying “I’ll just have a quick hit of tennis” and before you know it its hours later.
