To Cheat or Not to Cheat? |

Have your ever cheated in a game? Bought gold, become invincible or just
helped your self to just one little health pack? Have you botted your way to
uber status or just wished your character could run a bit faster? I sat down the
other day and thought about all the games that I have played and realized that I
too was a cheater.
My cheating days started early with our first Playstation and Tomb Raider 2,
where a simple routine released all weapons and topped up your ammunition. The
entire family, who used to gather around and backseat drive Lara, actively
encouraged the cheat. It was seen not as cheating but as a way of accessing more
fun. Annoying wildlife…. just get out the rocket launcher. Too many baddies in
the way of your archaeological enjoyment of the finer detail on that tomb, whip
out the Uzi’s.
Since then my cheating has gotten more serious. As time challenged student
researching games there is no cheat too lowly, no game walkthrough too detailed
and no shortcut too short. Before the game has even finished installing I’m out
there on the internet looking for answers to questions I don’t even have yet. I
run the game on one screen with the cheats on the other. The question is does it
take away from the enjoyment of the game? The answer is no and yes.
Lets face it there is nothing better than skipping tedium. We have all played a
game where bungled save points have forced us to repeat insanely difficult
challenges again and again. There are times when if I had to walk lethargically
across another featureless piece of wasteland I would have screamed. After all
if you are not into a particular feature of a game then sometimes a cheat is the
only way you are going to persevere. I will always know that the Prince of
Persia remains forever trapped in a spiraling elevator being attacked by zombies
because I was too crap to win the fight, too pissed off to try again and because
I couldn’t find a Playstation cheat to get me through it.
Of course not all cheats are predictable. Like the time I accidentally turned
the final boss fight into a farce. Note readers do not type in
dancedanceMalek unless you wish to face a dancing Twi’lek instead of
light-saber wielding Sith Lord in the penultimate challenge in KOTOR.
So where does all this cheating stop? Where do you draw the line? For me its
simple, play with other people, play fair. That’s not to say that I haven’t been
tempted by the lure of filthy e-bay lucre, especially with a gold sink for a
daughter (you bought what on the auctions?). If I thought every one else was
doing it would I? Probably.
Cheat yourself not others
Cheat for fun,
Cheat to make it fun
Cheat to bring back the fun
But that’s my choice… what’s yours?
