Yeah, but they pushed this out in 11 months.
It's a test of the client engine they'll be using in an upcoming free to play MMORPG.
They basically said the studio and a lot of it's top staff had a couple recent projects fall through (mythos/hellgate) so they wanted to put out a fun cut priced single player game to get morale back up. Netcode and the extra issues it introduces (you need to make classes actually work together etc) would have compromised how quick and simple they wanted the game to be.
