I was a bit surprised to learn that they've decided to do an "intermediary" Torchlight. Last I had heard, they released T1 as the single-player "proof of concept" and then they'd release an MMO version several years later.
Still, this may be a good idea for them to work out some kinks with multiplayer and advance the story.
I imagine they may be trying to imitate the success of the Warcraft series (Warcraft, Warcraft II, WoW). Which may not be far from the mark considering that a lot of Runic's employees are former Blizzard guru's.
I'm still playing Torchlight and I will most certainly purchase Torchlight 2.
