I really like the global inventory system, where if you get a loaded survivor back to a safe zone and log out, you can shuffle as much of their inventory as you like into a global pool that all your characters can access from the safe zones.

The key to this game is safety in numbers. Bandits are cowards by nature, and won't kill unless they're sure they come out on top. If a bandit has to risk dying, he won't go for the kill.
