Default BFRomance

This is a report from one of the SWG Staffers regarding a hypothetical game discussed at the Game Developers confernce :

The most fun off-topic (for me) seminar I attended was watching Will Wright (The Sims), Warren Spector (Deus Ex) and Raph deal with a hypothetical game design challenge to create a game with “Love” as its central theme (the moderator cited that so much television, film and music deal with love as the central theme, but so few games hit upon the issue besides a subplot between the main character and an NPC). All three of them had some pretty humorous approached. Not sure if any are viable (or even desired), but all of us were intrigued by Will Wright’s solution to create a meta-game inside of a game like Battlefield 1942, where instead of playing soldiers you could be lovers trying to find your mate and get to safe locations - all while real FPS players were fighting around you. They could (and probably would) shoot you, but would suffer the same penalty as shooting a team mate. His slides of cartoon lovers in the middle of gritty BF war screenshots were hilarious. Anyway, don’t worry, we don’t have immediate plans to create Massively Multiplayer Harlequin Romance (though Raph did have some amusing ideas along that line…)
