Re-directed from another thread...

You lucky, lucky b@stard!

Did you play OFP, Zutta?
(I didn't, but am keen to bite the bullet, dl from Morphicon... and get into ArmA, especially after some of you other guys have posted your specs & associated ArmA performance.)

The reason I ask, Zutta, is that it seems all the former OFP fans are absolutely already committed to ArmA because of the OFP legacy of fantastic gameplay and premise... Almost regardless of ArmA's current performance-related problems on release, and beyond that its seeming hunger for PC resources anyway. And there seems to be a strong faith (almost absolute) in Bohemia Interactive's ability to strengthen ArmA's performance well into its lifecycle, based on OFP's last 5 years of popularity.
Of course, one's enjoyment of it ultimately depends entirely on whether you like the slow pace demanded by extreme realism. (I hope I can handle it. I want to...)
Maybe I should re-direct any knock-on thoughts to this thread. See you there.

Argh! My ArmA mail-out with BuyArmA.com was missed, so now I'm just getting a refund instead. I downloaded the full German version yesterday anyway, so now I'm ready for MP.

I tried Coop on OGN with about 15-20 players. The AI players were a little bit laggy and hard to shoot with their jaggy movements, which seemed to only occur each time I took a shot - like a correction. In the 2nd round it just crashed half way through.

I tried CTI by myself. It still uses the AI. Not sure how it all works yet.
- It sometimes spawns me without a weapon even though I thought I selected one.
- Not sure how the 'hiring' works. I hired 2 BMP's (only choice) but they ran out of fuel in 30 seconds. Couldn't find a fuel depot, unless there's a fuel truck around somewhere.

I like the auto mission downloads. That should be good. The sound is proving to be an obstacle for good game play. You can't clearly tell where sounds are coming from, which is a problem for snipers and vehicles.

I wish the server joining screen would show real ping values - not sure if 2 block or 3 blocks is better? The filtering doesn't seem to work fully. Filtering for a ping of 100 still includes servers up to 300 overseas. Creating a server doesn't have many on-screen options either. Can't specify a duration.

You probably need TeamSpeak to properly coordinate things.

Yeah, it's a stupid system. The fewer blocks the better.

There's other far more annoying things about MP, compounded by the control-hijack-hack which I had heard about but had not experienced until last night

So I'm sorry I didn't say hi ScopE, saw you pop in but I was fighting for control of my guy.

EDIT: It happened again tonight, this time to a few of us... we were controlling each other, chatting under each others' names, etc... so maybe not an evil hack and just a bug that occasionally allows two players to occupy a single soldier? Weird.

PS: Doc I've created a Track IR profile for ArmA and it works OK, PM if you want a copy.

Cheers Voics
I saw you too but was somewhat overwhelmed with it being my first ever connection to a MP server, that I couldn't find the text-chat system.

Yes I think you are most wise, Mr Spec.

I don't want to slam the game, but in it's current state I wouldn't want to wish its frustrations onto anyone, particularly based on the extent to which I know your likes and dislikes of previous games, Spec.
... For TOGgers who were fans of OFP, however, I wouldn't presume to comment or influence them... Obviously they have the prior incentive of knowing the gameplay they're after.

I'm just about to update my "first impressions" thread in any case ...

ScopE I assure you OFP was infinitely better than this - somehow almost every one of its features has inexplicably been buggered for ArmA. I do trust we will see big improvements (eg helicopter patch now in the works) but there are so many problems, and so much disagreement about what causes them (or if they're even problems, many insist the game is fine!) that I doubt if it will ever regain OFP's superb playability.

Having said that, I play at the absolute lowest graphic settings, bitch about it constantly in the MP chat and yet I still can't stay away from it, LOL...

But if you don't have it yet I agree, save yourself the agro and check back after the 505 release.

Nice little bonus, most of the coops work thru the single player, just copy them to your missions folder.

About that stupid ping display....

I assume one green box is best because Aussie servers have one or two boxes only, whereas the three-box servers are always german/euro. And because IMO low number of boxes corresponds to low ping and vice-versa.

I did notice that Clint's server had three boxes, but I put this down to him hosting on his residential connection.

Yet I now see ppl on the BIS forums agreeing that three boxes are best:

Which is it???

is anyone having probs with the laser desig?

the other night clint and myself tried for a few hours with this to work out how not to drop your own bombs with the aid of the desig.

we lased a target and got the target call back and when one of us approached we got no indication in the aircraft what it was locked on, so we used the as just ordinary dumb bombs and caused some friendly damage

we also found out that you can assign all your squads to different choppers and fly them all over at once even the harriers using AI as pilots, which was pretty cool since i MISSED it in my german manual
