An older gamer wanting to join TOG!
Hi, my name is Scott and I am a 35 year old gamer. I enjoy a few hobbies which include gaming, reading and playing soccer.
I started off playing RPGs when I was a kid (around 12 I think), and it has remained my favorite genre. I still remember old games like Demon's Winter, Gemstone Warrior, and Caves of Kharkan (sp?). I particularly enjoy cRPGs because they offer a more "open-ended" and stat driven experience. Or at least they used too.. I look to indie RPGs nowadays for what the Ultima, Wizardry and M&M gmaes used to provide, but that's an argument for another day! That's not to say I don't enjoy the console RPGs, but in my opinion, if a typical console RPG doesn't have a fantastic story to make up for its relatively rigid gameplay, it turns out to be too much of a chore instead of a game. If I had to pick the best console RPG of recent days, it would have to be Xenogears.. or maybe PD Saga.
I do play other genres although outside of RPGs, I don't really have a genre preference. However, when it comes to games that have a story involved, I prefer fleshed-out "adult" tones that make one think about something deeper than killing the next monster or finding a key. The Metal Gear series is an example of this, as is Deus Ex. These games are a rarity these days.
As I would imagine with the rest of you, I do wish I had more time to play games at this age. It has become difficult for me to finish an rpg, even given three or four months. I only get 6-7 hours of gaming time per week, on average. I am currently working on FF XII. I have a backlog of about 15 games to play.
Let's see, I currently own a low-end computer for gaming, a PS2, and many older console systems, with vintage games that I plan on sticking in a vault someday.
Random musings.. off the top of my head, I think one of the most under-rated RPGs of the past is "Dark Wizard", on the Sega CD system. Part of the reason it's not well known is due to Sega CD's failure as as system. However, that game is truly one of the better turn-based strategy RPGs ever made.
Can't think of anything else right now. I hope I am worthy of being a member!
