Hello TOGgers! Or is it TOGites? Maybe TOGlodytes?
I found TOG in the guild of the week list on the Guild Wars site. It appears to be a great group so I'm applying for membership.
You are 25 years of age or older.
Passed that milestone in 1980-sumpin'. I'm old enough to say where I was when Kennedy was shot, and if anybody says, "Ted Kennedy was shot?", I'll laugh and quote some other lines from
When Harry Met Sally -- one of my favorites movies.
You have read our AUP and FAQ and agree to it's terms and conditions.
I read the AUP and passed it on to my law firm, Dewey, Cheatum, and Howe, and received their approval. I also read the FAQ and the opening section convinced me I'm in the right place.
Where am you?
As you can probably tell from the Kennedy reference above, I'm an American and currently live near Seattle in the Pacific Northwest. My gaming time is limited, but when playing it will usually be late at night after the kids are in bed. Since I'm in the Pacific time zone, it means the east coast US will be in bed, the Europeans will be waking up, and the Australians will be out drinking beer -- a safe assumption no matter what time of day it is.
Why are you interested in TOG?
I recently won a copy of Guild Wars Nightfall -- free game, woohoo! Though my old PC meets the minimum specs my video card isn't up to snuff so I haven't been able to play yet. I found a decent used video card on EBay so while waiting for it to arrive I've been reading all about Guild Wars. It appears you can play it solo using heroes and henchmen, but it's pretty apparent that it was designed to be played as a team. The only game I've ever played online other than board games is CounterStrike, and it's been several years since I last picked up a virtual gun. I remember playing with the unwashed masses -- rude, swearing, cheating, no teamwork. Fortunately I found CoFR (Crusty Old Fossil Rockers), a group quite similar to TOG in philosophy, and played exclusively on their servers. It made all the difference in the world to play with a mature group of folks who were there to have fun, celebrate when you win, congratulate your opponents when you lose, and always have a laugh. The prospects of playing Guild Wars with the general public wasn't appealing so I began looking through the lists of Guilds and found TOG on the Guild of the Week list. At first glance I liked what I saw, so I'm applying for membership.
What games do you play?
As it did for many of you, my electronic gaming started with Pong, but if I were to list all the games over all the years I'd probably exceed the message size limit for the forum. As I mentioned above, the only game from the TOG list that I play (or soon will) is Guild Wars. With a wife and kids, I don't have the time or finances to get into new games when they come out so I'm always a couple years (or decades) behind. I love digging through the bargain bin to find awesome games that have been pushed off the shelves to make room for newer ones. There's nothing like getting 60 hours of entertainment for a couple bucks. I recently finished Might and Magic VI which came out in 1998. It's the third time I played and I still love it. I replayed Myst around Christmas, and I'm currently in the middle of Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist, a Sierra classic from 1993. With DOSBox installed, you can play lots of great old games. The remainder of my online gaming time goes towards Brettspielwelt which is German for "board game world". It's a free site that has about 70 games available from classics like Go and Backgammon, to family games like Transamerica and Carcassonne, to advanced games like Princes of Florence, Power Grid, and Settlers of Cataan. It was created by some friends in Germany who wanted to play their favorite board games even when they couldn't be together. The language barrier was significant at first if you didn't know German, but thousands of players from around the world now play so their web site and all the games are available in several languages. Players can join together to form cities which you build and landscape using income you earn from playing games. I've made a lot of great friends, many in Europe, by playing there.
That about wraps it up. I look forward to hanging out with you folks and getting some Guild Wars action in once I can play.
