Hi all, I'm John, AKA Vigilo in the Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO), and a host of other names in a host of other games I've played over the years. I am a 40 year old husband and father of one (
with another on the way). I am also the shepard of our herd of three cats and two dogs. Our happy family lives in the Midwest of the USA.
I a well over the age of 25 (
not even sure I remember life at 25 anymore
) and I've been gaming for nearly 30 years. My games went from table-top strategy and RPG games like Axis and Allies and Dungeons & Dragons, to computer games like Wizardry, Wasteland, the Ultima Series and more (
on computers like the Commodore Vic-20, Commodore 64, Apple IIe, and PC ranging from 286 with MS Dos to my current Pentium with Vista). My first Online games were played on BBSs (
Bulletin Board System)
someone else's computer that you used your telephone line to call into). The most memorible one being Tradewars. I did a ton of chat based gaming via America Online and other services as well.
Eventually I discovered MMOs and never looked back. Acheron's Call, Anarchy Online, World of Warcraft, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Matrix Online, Guild Wars and many more sucked away both time from my life and money from my wallet over the years.
Recently I was playing World of Warcraft again. I got my Paladin to level 80 (
the first time I'd hit the level cap in any game if memory serves) and was in the mod of "OK, I'm 80 now what the heck do I do?" when the economy in the U.S. took a nose dive. Having to cut back in many areas in our family budget, I couldn't justify paying to play an MMO anymore and had to close my WoW account.
I played LOTRO back when it first launched. I left only because I had no time for MMOs in my life at the time. However, I had paid for a lifetime membership back then so now I am back in the game as it had no impact on my budget and its a ton of fun to boot! Being a Lord of the Rings fan in general it's really a perfect fit for me.
I was a member of TOG quite awhile ago. I can't remember the old name I used here or even what game I was playing at the time (
LOL, one of the issues we older gamers face I guess). I want to join (or re-join)
The Older Gamers simply because I want to be able to connect with other gamers who have real life, adult issues that impact their ability to game. People like me who will understand when I suddenly have to go because my daughter had a bad dream, my wife has a craving, or my dog decides to kitchen is a rest room.
I've not had many positive experiences gaming with kids. They don't seem to understand my real life limitations, they don't get that I don't like "smack talking" and they make me feel even older when I reference Wizardry, Van Halen, or the gas shortages of the 70s and they have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about.
I'm also hoping to find older gamers who play LOTRO. I'm not sure what server(s) you all play on here (
I'm on Landroval), and I am already in a Kinship that I enjoy there. However, I'd love to find new friends my own age to connect with in-game, especially if they like to roleplay in-game (or are trying to learn how to make that work like I am).
Hopefully being long-winded is not an instant no vote.
