Ahhh yes, well touche' to that! You are correct in the observation and pinpoint of where a name like this would come from (yet I wasn't 16 at the time - more like 22). Back in the days of inception of my handle, there was not a single handle by the name of just "Cornbread." My handle originated with the gaming guild - Dead Presidents (
www.dpguild.net). This organization was founded by literally a group of older truckers that loved to play RTCW and other FPS games. So put truckers with language, and to fit in with a really ruckous bunch of guys, this was used as a play on words/spelling. That guild is strictly 21+ with very limited exceptions due to the type of language/images that one may see. I never was into all that, but I was heavily into gaming and wanted an older audience to group with. Sometimes sacrifices need to be made right?
Come to find out after QuakeCon 2004 that these guys (and gals) were just normal hard working average people; people that were older and ostricized or annoyed by the younger crowd of gamers. They just wanted to play games, have fun, chat it up on TS, and make fun memories with their m8s around the world. So after meeting people all over the globe, the handle stuck - naturally - because it was a catchy, never used, play on spelling.. and it fit the group. Later, as I progressed into NWN and NWN2 and then becoming said GM previously mentioned, I grew to eventually hosting a server, etc. My name stuck with many many people, as I was about to find out in 2006.
It was about this time that I realized that maybe the handle wouldn't work for everyone due to its nature. I agree with you there. It had its purpose and time and place... and perhaps those memories long ago created are still near and dear to my online corporeal being. Be that as it may, when I started to seek an alternative - just "Cornbread," well... it seems I had a following of sorts or perhaps sparked a trend because even today, its impossible to use "Cornbread" as a handle nearly anywhere - including my online bank if you can believe that! Gmail, yahoo, hotmail, American Airlines, and at least a dozen other sites already have a registered user as "Cornbread," yet my current handle is never used (for well pointed obvious reasons I suppose). Well, you can imagine my frustration - wanting to end the phalic name and go clean with just a single bullet, but what can one do when so many people have already beaten the name into a blood pulp on every site known to man?
Alas, I have been left with frustration. How do you tell one who is tied to a handle for so long to simply change when their hands are bound like a forgotten dog in an abandoned warehouse? If I could be Cornbread - just Cornbread - I would be in agreeance to a change. The obsession has spilled over to even my real life - vanity plate and all. If the name is already taken, it seems rather cliche' to add an X at the end or number sequence when, well... without being conceited, I was the original Cornbread of Cornbreads.
In any case, if it comes to be that I cannot join because of my handle or lack of available alternate mentioned above, then so be it. I would dearly enjoy the opportunity to play with you all, but in the end, its not so important to be part of a larger whole by name, but by the friendships that bind us. I feel that already I have made connections with three of the members here, despite not being a member.
If nothing else, we could always group in game even if I am not a member. My game handle for Fallen Earth is Angelica Vezina (it is my one (and only) toon).
