I came by my online "handle" because way back in the dark ages when I tried to use a variation of my real name (back before any of us thought about online security or privacy), it kept being rejected as having been taken already. So I reached for one of my less popular books and searched for a very minor character. Lo and behold, it worked! I have been "distantsmoke" ever since.
I play RPGs. Not exclusively, but they are my first and longest lasting love. I don't generally play MMORPGs because you never really know who is on the other side. Most of my gaming friends still work for a living, which doesn't often leave a lot of time for getting together online. It doesn't help that we are scattered around the world. (Time zones and stuff like that).
My introduction to console gaming was the NES and the very first Final Fantasy game. Unbelievably it was all my mother's fault. She got tired of playing one day and threw the controller at me. (Not really her fault, she had already said 3 times she wanted to stop playing). Up to that point I had been more than happy to simply watch the story unfold as my mother played. My mother got the NES when her second intellivision died. I'm sure she was the oldest gamer alive at the time. Especially since I had graduated college and was working full time by then. Yes, I was poor and still living at home.
Why do I want to join TOG? I just spent the entire day researching a question online. My spirit finally broke when I received a reply to a question I asked. The reply was inaccurate, ungrammatical, and absolutely, totally didn't come anywhere near answering the question I had asked. It looked as if it had been written by a 5 year old. Possibly a mentally challenged 5 year old. It came from a large well known company with a store in all 50 states.
I would like to be able to discuss games, systems and related issues with people who know the value of money (I'm not rich), know the value of time, and can actually read and write. When I saw the name of this community I thought "Ah Ha!!" This must be the place for me.
