Greetings, one and all.
My screen name is
haversine. If you do a bit of Google work, you'll see its a reference to the old formula (dating from the age of sail) for finding the surface distance between two points on a sphere using latitude and longitude. So -- I guess now you know I'm into math, as well as naval fiction (eg Patrick O'Brian). I'm also a science guy, but that's a long story with a bunch of unexpected twists and turns.
I'm also
haversine on PSN and
IGN.
Games I'm Playing (Or want to play)
I've been gaming for years, but have avoided online or multiplayer, for the simple reason that ... well, it's in the FAQ, isn't it? I want to avoid the goofballs. They don't add anything to my life, and I'd rather gaming be fun than be a chore. I've been Susan Shepard in
Mass Effect 2, and Isaac Clarke in
Dead Space 2, and Cole McGrath in
Infamous.
For a long while, that was enough. And then
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit came along.
I'm becoming an online addict, I suppose. I've even enjoyed running around and causing mass chaos as a Necromorph in the online version of Dead Space 2.
I've hesitated at the online FPS shooter games, though. I like the Call of Duty series, and Bad Company 2 ... even Killzone (looking forward to Killzone 3, in fact). There just seems to be a steep learning curve, and I'd rather play with folks who already know what they are doing and want a supportive team player. I'm not some goober who will hose the mission just to rack up my kill count.
About Myself
I do try to focus on gaming as "haversine", and leave the "me" part a bit of a mystery. Plus I have yet to be able to tell a story involving myself in under 1000 characters.
Gaming History
Wow. I started off on the Atari 2600, and was thrilled to discover if you drove the tank in "Combat" into the wall the right way, you could teleport to the other side of the screen (via a bug) and take the enemy by surprise. I was also in on the dawn of pen-and-paper RPGs, and played original (old school) D&D as well as real obscure ones, like Villains & Vigilantes.

Anything Else?
I guess you can tell I'm from the 70s. That makes me one of the Ancient Ones. Now, chant my name in the center of a pentagram with a TRS-80 at each point and type in the magic phrase
100 K$ = INKEY$
200 IF K$ = "" THEN GOTO 100
300 PRINT "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, SIGNING OFF!"
