Hey everyone, nice to meet you. A friend recommended that I apply for TOG because it is a strong, friendly community for gaming, and that's what I am looking for at the moment. I have just finished with the Rift open beta as I assume a lot of you have, and I am looking forward to the head start in a few days.
I've come from a long background of MMORPGs primarily, with a dottering of RTS and FPS here and there, but I tend to try most games that come out. Most notably, I played FFXI for approximately 5 years, and WoW for about the same. In both cases I played in relatively hardcore progression type guilds, but I am not really after the same out of Rift - I don't have the same time or drive to stay up for late late nights and painful work days anymore. I also spent a couple of years in Neverwinter Nights 1 persistant realms, one big one in particular I played for over 2 years, though I can't remember it's name.
Prior to all that though, the first system I really played was the old NES, and as far as consoles go I have always been a Nintendo type of guy - duck hunt and zelda are my earliest game memories. I spent a number of highschool years playing various Games Workshop tabletop games as well; mostly necromunder and warhammer fantasy.
I played a lot of counterstrike when it was in its prime (1.3-1.6 sort of time), but besides that I never got into FPS much. I designed the original mIRC bot that is used in iPGN-comp pugs many many years ago, though I am sure it has gone through many iterations since then... I love RTS as well, though I would be the first to say I am not very good at them. I much prefer TD style maps in most of those type of games.
I want to join TOG because I am looking for a group of gamers that is mature and understands that life happens, and isn't guided by a hormone response that leads them to punch the closest wall if one doesn't get one's way. I am sure some adults respond in a similar fashion, but it seems much less likely. My friend speaks highly of the community here, and that is what I am really after from my online gaming experience now.
A little about me to end the post; my name is Duncan. I am from Melbourne.. mostly.. though I have spent a lot of time here and there. I was born in Canberra, moved to Melbourne at 3, have lived in Japan for a year, and Arnhem Land for a year, on an Island off the coast - an interesting experience. I am 28 years old, Christmas eve is my birthday. I have studied classical trombone at uni, as well as a degree in bummery (arts), Japanese and Sociology. I worked as a manager at an agricultural research company, as a teacher in Japan and Arnhemland, and now I am studying to become an enrolled nurse in Queensland with an aim to move on to Registered nursing. That's pretty much me in a nutshell! I get quickly bored doing the same thing, which translates into my gaming as well - in WoW for example, I really only played druid and paladin, because each of them could easily transition into other roles.
Since I live in Queensland, my time zone is AEST and we don't have daylight savings (grr). GMT+10, or something like that. Is it +9? Not sure.
