What games are you currently play/looking to play with TOG?
I've played World of Warcraft for many years (about 5), currently on a break from it, but plan on going back with the next patch
I've Played EVE for a bit as well, and while I enjoyed it, I struggled with the very heavy PvP part of it. PvE is possible, but anything that's significant in the game is PvP related which is 1) not my thing, really and 2) Time consuming, and I don't have much time.
I'm currently playing around with LOTRO on a premium membership, "The Order of Gilthoniel" being a kin advert on the forums there that led me here.
What was the first machine you played games on or pen and paper game you played?
I'm not a very heavy gamer historically, so my exposure to any kind of RPG / online game was World of Warcraft 5 years ago on a P4 3.2 ghz that was really bought for work-from-home purposes, and simply sufficed for gaming. No pen and paper gaming history here.
Why do you want to join TOG?
I'd never heard of you guys until I saw the ad for "The Order of Gilthoniel" kin on the LOTRO forums, and to be honest, I feel kind of gutted that it's taken me so long to find you. WoW is my online gaming central point, and while there are a few mature, knowledgable people in the community, I, despite my best efforts of patience, find myself becoming increasingly infuriated with the elitist attitude derived from a false sense of power (sitting at a keyboard somewhere on the 'net) of most of the players. Being part of a community in an environment of more like minded people to myself, while still being able to escape to my gaming world a few hours a week, is the stuff that (old person gamer) dreams are made of
Tell us about yourself or anything else you'd like to share.
My name is Robert and I'm a 40 year old software engineer from Johannesburg, South Africa. I'm married (17 years on the 29th October) with a Son, who pretty much defines me as a human being (yes, I'm 100% devoted to him).
As I mentioned, I've been playing online games for about 5 years now, starting with World of Warcraft. About 2 years ago, a friend of mine convinced me to try EVE, which I did for about 6 months. I loved it, but the time required became a bit too much for me. Recently, I've been exploring single player games, with Dragon Age leading that drive. LOTRO is something that holds appeal for me, having read the books numerous times since I was in high school, defining me as a very avid Tolkien fan (although not as avid as some others, I have recently discovered)
My gameplay style is very much solo-MMO. I know, it's a weird style of play, playing a multiplayer game in a solo way, but it's basically all I have time for, and mostly, that "time" is very late at night, for maybe an hour or 2. You see, I don't play games when my family requires attention, to any degree. They are my number one priority, and it's unfair to expect a group member in game to wait until I have finished an impromptu conversation with my wife or son while we're in the middle of a raid or dungeon run (or any other group activity).
This isn't to say I never engage in group activities, I do, but they happen few and far between.
As an illustration, it is now a good 6 hours since I started typing up this post, such are the other things I need to attend to as a priority.
As for what I focus on in the MMO world, levelling and questing is definitely my focus (you can keep your raiding and world firsts - doesn't interest me in the slightest), along with exploring, crafting and sometimes a little roleplay. I find myself choosing back-stories, names, matching races to classes to ensure it makes sense, matching professions to classes to make sense. For example, a warrior tailor makes zero sense to me, any warrior I play will do blacksmithing (or equivalent) or, at a push, leatherworking. For an MMO (or even a single player games) to grab me, the world needs to be engaging, I must be able to do my thing with no boundaries. Aion didn't work for me because it felt too restrictive in that regard. I bought the game, but never subbed after month 1.
Anyway, that's me, it's a typical (for me) rambling post, that probably gave more info than was necessary, but hey, that's how I am - I talk alot ... unless I have to actually speak, then you'll find me quite withdrawn.
Hope to hear from you soon.
