Actually.. from what I hear (brother in law works in Defense), the Collins Class submarines are now excellent vessels, after the initial teething problems were rectified.

In a recent set of war games with the US Navy, the Collins class subs acquitted themselves so well that the US Navy was running out of combatants, and had to resurrect a few of them.

Only problem with them is that Australia has built these world leading diesel-electric submarines at a huge cost - and now what are we going to do with all the investment, technology and infrastructure? We're not selling the Collins subs to anyone, and we're certainly not building up a huge submarine fleet...
