Membership Request
I'd like to join TOG. I'm 52 years old and an RTS gaming "tragic"; meaning I really like RTS but I'm not necessarily that good at it. I have read and agree to the acceptable use policy and server rules. My New Year resolution was to keep playing RTS and never join a bowls club. (Apologies to those who enjoy lawn bowls.)
My favourite games are Total Annihilation and Cossacks. I am really keen to play Supreme Commander when it is released. I have some personal theoretical areas of interest in RTS. These are to do with both the economic and military simulation aspects of RTS and how they mesh tactically and strategically. I played the OC Mod version of Cossacks for a while (a very small community of players). The Mod version was so interesting I wrote a 60 page strategy and tactics guide to it. It was not just a build list guide or tactics guide. It attempted to take a very "military" angle and dealt with issues like scouting, indirection (feints etc), concentration of force, manouvering for advantage, accepting or declining force engagements, strategic centres of gravity (schwerpunkt), the differing requirements of the economy (spread) and the military (concentration) in the game and so on. In addition, I am very interested (at a design concept level) in the issue of scale and realism in RTS, how realistic time/distance scales and "playability" are in conflict and how this conflict might be resolved to create a new generation of RTS games. In particular, I think there might be a way to meld strategic and tactical timescales into one game all in real time(s). This would not entail a clunky turn based strategic time scale followed by a tactical battle time sacle as tried by one game I could name. But in the interim, I am real keen to play Supreme Commander when it comes out and to meet like-minded TOGs. And of course, I want to play with mature, honest players because my biggest dislike is the hackers and cheaters out there. |
