As far as I am aware I think the Co-Op is seperate (but possibily related storyline-wise). I don't think they are the SP missions with a mate.

Gee, that would be a little disappointing if true. I'd much prefer to replace an AI minion with a human.

Actually that would may be good if they are separate stories. I wanted to hold doing the story in single player so it would not spoil the fun in co-op. If separate then no need to wait. Like everything we will have to wait and see then.

They are definitely separate from the SP campaign. Co-op story will be tied to SP, but not the same story. Link (go to 11:50)
