Default Poor ADSL performance (plz help me)

Hey all
For the past week i have been experiencing terrible broadband speeds in the evening (normally affect from 9pm aest onward). Our current plan is with optus and we have 1.5Mbps / 256kbps with 7gb on peak and 14 gb off peak (optus no longer offers this plan to users, im not sure if this has any significance).

Normally when i play cod2 i get 60-80 ping on gamearena servers and between 80 and 100 ping on most other australian servers. Its been this way for over a year. But now every evening from about 9pm aest (i live in WA so 7pm my time) my ping gradually increases usually in increments of 25-50 and within 15min i have 250-300 ping and it stays like this till piont i get so frustrated and quit.

I have done oz speed test every day while problems have been occuring and the results are poor with 0.4-0.7mb/s line speed only and not the 1.5mb/s which im paying for. I even took ozspeed tests and 11pm aest and 1am for a few nights and the slow line speed remained. By the next morning i have 1.5mb/s and this persists all day until evening when problem occurs again.

I noticed workers in our suberb (about 5 days ago although i have not seen any for last few days) and i asked if what they doing could effecting ADSL speeds and one guy said they were installing a new optus cable. What would they be doing? i didnt understand? Is this preparing for adsl 2+ in areas or could they have been trying to fix problem cause local exchange was overloaded or something?

I would really appreciate some help cause its driving me insane.

I had similar problems a while ago with Telstra so changed ISPs and the problem has completely vanished.

As you can see I am also in W.A.

I had a bit of a look at whirlpool and i couldnt find much. I will have another look. I just done another speed test 3hrs after my original test (now 12pm aest) and the net is still only 0.6mb/s. No idea why this is happening to me

What type of modem do you have?
Are you using wireless or wired?
Is it connected to via Ethernet or usb?

Do you have other people using your line?
Other computers running in your house?

If it is happening at a regular time then it might be the network is congested at those times. Optus bandwidth may be to low in that area or you could live far enough away from the exchange that you are at the limit of the line.

Just a few possibilities there mate but some info on the network setup would help.

I have a netgear dg834, wired and no idea about ethernet or usb (we have a hub in our shed with 4 computers connected in lan - dont know if that helps). 3 other people use the line in my house except problem occurs with them off (or on and idle). None of the above factors have changed in the last week and we have had good internet service with above variables for a year now. I think that suggests its a external problem

Ok i contacted optus and they got me to run their speed test. It came out and 1/3 what is supposed to be and also was decreasing every second. By end of phone call was 1/6 speed supposed to be. I isolated the router ie unplugged our phones etc and problems persisted. Then sending a telstra tech to check service in our area in next 3 working days. Hopefully they will fix it and credit us for last month.

Yup I had trouble when I first got ADSL a few years back I was poorly connected at the exchange so maybe you have a similar problem.
