I've also found some items I can't pick up sometimes. I seriously think my arms are too short! I know it sounds funny but I'm actually not kidding. What I find most useful is if I lay down facing the item and move around it. The same trick seems to work for tents I can't access because they're too close to a tree. It doesn't, however, do anything for the times you can't find the gear slot on a vehicle, or find the spot you have to be standing in to be able to, say, repair a tire.

And have you tried any of the ArmA II single player content? I didn't do any research on the net, I just played the tutorials, until I figured out it was almost exactly the same as Operation Flashpoint. After all, Day Z is free, it's ArmA II you wasted money on, have you played it yet? It's a great game!

Hatchets that are interactable have red axe heads. Quite a few houses have a chopping block in their yards, but those axes are part of the scenery.

I don't think that calling DayZ, or Arma for that matter, a 'game' is right. It's really a simulation. Arma is the civillian offspring of the VBS series of simulators used by a few military forces (including Australia), and DayZ is always going to reflect that. There are limitations that are imposed by the base game that will always influence the mod.

It really is worth sticking at, though. The payoff is well worth the learning curve.

It is also true that some servers seem to have rubbish loot. Sometimes after starting I find nothing of much use in towns, 0 loot in deer stands etc. Then I can log into another server and BAM, the high and medium yield buildings are chock full of decent gear to help survive and maybe a decent weapon or two to defend myself with.

This can be due to the state of the server you are on, ones that reset less often can get bogged down with uncycled useless gear (if a loot pile is totally cleared and you leave then reenter 10 mins later it will have spawned fresher loot, which of course could be trash but thats the way it works).

It is all a % chance when you enter an area and the loot starts spawning, so there is always the possibility that "bad" loot might be found (though if you pick up trash cans/bottles into your main inventory you can press F to cycle your ammo/grenades AND the trash can be thrown to make noise and distract Zeds).

Once you have had your first few breakthroughs with success in this game, dying can become the fun bit where you restart building kit to survive away from the towns.

Reinforcing what the others have said, I think you are judging far to quick.
Arma II itself is a game, and one I have had Years of fun playing.
You do need to remember, this is a mod for a 'combat simulator' not a FPS.
This is a game and a mod about strategy, thinking, skill, and patience.

Before you throw away the arma series, I would suggest playing some Arma II vanilla online. This is the base version of the game with no addons. Short of that, both arma vanilla and operation arrow head have some massive single player content. This will teach you the game mechanics and basics of the play.

This is not all arma has to offer, there are so many and varied mods that come with the series. DayZ just happens to be the latest craze to sweep the arma community, and only a miniscule portion of what the series has to offer.

My honest opinion is that it is the most bang for buck money can get on the gaming market.
And probably is since the original Half Life release.
Massive statement, but I dare someone to show me wrong

I bought Arma2OA for DayZ and jumped into to it with both feet, i had a hard time at the start but with a bit of info from the people on TS and a few mistakes of my own i have learned "the hard way".

Since then i have played Arma2 a bit and enjoyed it but DayZ is amazing, so many amazing situations just unfold from interaction with people and the game.

I would suggest reading this thread to get an idea about how amazing this game is.

And get on TeamSpeak, if you need to ask how to do something everyone will help.

Yes, what everyone says is true. It's suppose to be hard. It's this exact reason that sales of Arma went through the roof. Rocket is creating a game that creates emotion.

I personally have never had my heart beat so fast the first time I got into a fire-fight in DayZ. After a few days of playing, I had finally got to a point where I had some decent weapons and was simply exploring, looking to upgrade everything I had. It was then, in Zelenogorsk, that I encountered my first PvP action. I, of course, came out on the losing end. However, it was so exhilarating, that at that point I wanted MORE! I came out of that fire-fight with the hair on my arms standing up and my hands shaking. I think it was due to the fact that I had so much involved in my current character. I had spent a few good hours on that character, looting, crawling, creeping around and felt like I had really accomplished something. And now another player was trying to take all that away. It made combat feel real. Those other run and gun games never did it for me - this one did!

The game execs told Rocket that his idea couldn't be done. That nobody would buy a game that was this difficult and had perma-death. The game execs said the masses want run&gun. But for many, DayZ was exactly what we wanted. We needed something new, something where we didn't consistently have the best weapons in the game, something that required a significant time investment to be good at, and above all else, something that invokes emotion. I look forward to the day when I can say I was an Alpha tester of DayZ; a game that was revolutionary; a game that changed the gaming industry. Hats off to Rocket.

Definitely worth sticking with! If you have never played ARMA before then you have that learning curve on top of the DayZ learning curve. Learn the keyboard shortcuts and you'll be a long way down the track.

In a nut-shell, the basic commands are:
Z = Prone (very hard for z's to see you)
X = Crouch (reasonably difficulty to be seen but can still move OK)
C = Stand (can be seen easily)
Shift = Sneak (used in conjunction with the above stance controls). Double tap to toggle
Alt = Free Look (double tap to toggle).
G = Gear
F = Weapon Settings
R = Reload (hatchets need to be loaded when you equip them)

Then, as others have said, find out where you are and head inland. Use a map (I use ArmA 2 DayZ Chernarus map and have not found a better one yet). Raid barns and deer stands for weapons and food etc.

If you are in a developed area with Z's chasing you, run into a large building - wait a bit - then run back out again (by another door if possible). The Z's struggle getting in and out of buildings. If you find tall solid walls you can also use these to disorientate the Z's. If you're in the bush being chased by Z's run into the trees and try to get trunks between you and Z's. If you have a little distance hide behind a tree - crouch - and try to creep away. I've only ever successfully done this once so I usually just give up and get killed. But in built up areas it is quite easy to shake the Z's off your trail.

Finally, just always keep in mind that the game is about survival - not about killing. Shooting Z's usually just attracts other Z's (or bandits) so better to use stealth.

Ive been on the fence with ArmaII for a while , with all the other games around I just didnt have the time. Most of the other games a polished off graphically to be a bit more pretty .... but no where near the depth of the ArmaII world.

So I hopped off the fence a couple days ago. Let steam download and install it while I was at work. Last night played some of the training levels ... the biggest hurdle is just remembering what keys do what , and thats just a case of familiarity. Its a bit buggy sometimes when navigating action menus but just takes some getting used too. Will be instant death when scratching my head at the wrong time but I wont forget keys a second time I suppose.

Another week of playing Arma and then jump into DayZ.

Couple things I noticed just off the bat .... can you have a stash somewhere ? way up in the mountains that no one will find ? or a safe haven etc ...
Also Im thinking every server is different , is TOG playing on one in particular ?

cheers

Hope to see you guys on there soon.

Thanks for all the input people.
My favorite FPS type of game was the early deltaforce series if anyone played them where stealth and tactics mattered.
I had hopes this would feel like that but so far for me that hasn't been the case.

I suspect if they'd let you start with even a pipe or piece of wood so you had some ability to defend yourself I'd be alot happier but since I've yet to get any sort of weapon no matter how many places I've been that pretty much ruins it for me.
If the game is just about survival then why don't players just go out into the woods and sit?
I want to kill stuff and pit myself against both the zombies and other players and if you can't fight without a weapon then you can't really play the game IMHO.
Maybe I've been unlucky in finding stuff but I really don't want to spend hours and hours of real world time running around being unable to do anything except hide and die.

BTW having just looked for a non dayz game online and literally theres nothing but dayz that has a lowping and people playing it...oh well
