I would suggest, to prevent just straightlining it, having a couple of checkpoints in the route all competitors must pass in order to qualify to win. Maybe in a couple of small towns on the way.

Good idea although if you tried to "straighten" it in many of the vehicles (e.g. the Old Hatchback) it might take weeks to get there. Would be quicker running!

(Bah, lost the Hatchback I stole, fortunatley it only contained extra tools and food, but to counter that just gained a Coyote, GPS and M14 AIM from two other survivors logging in at the South Barracks. Bad timing for them, great for me Cheers BIZON1998 and Ultimate Warrior - my 3rd and 4th murders since I started back in June (Hatchet and Lee Enfield on the first two)).
