Steam is still really problematic when you don't have solid internet though. Would kinda suck if you had apps that wouldn't launch because they auto-started an update that you can't really finish because you're on a flakey 3G connection.

Not sure if we'll see other commercial game engines on there, big hitters like Unreal and Unity haven't embraced Apple's App store on the Mac yet, maybe steam will be the tipping point but I don't think they have an issue with discoverability with developers.

Steam still isn't every developer's cup of tea. Mojang, developer of Minecraft and Scrolls, found that Steam didn't give them the freedom they needed, regardless of the publicity and user base it would give them.

Yeah but Notch is a bit of a whiney tool of a developer, Minecraft was a fluke hit. There were heaps of similar games prior. It was simply luck that his game gained popularity over others and steamrolled like it did, it could have just as easily been someone else. Since then he simply seems to complain about what every other developer is doing, like it's a crime to try and make money any other way apart from the way he got lucky doing it.

At least that's the impression I get. Everytime I read something he's written he seems to be complaining about something.

Of his next 2 games are a hit, he can make his own platform, just like Steam's. There are so many indie games that never get any publicity, but something like a indie only Steam would be awesome.
