Default Compatibility of games to current O.S.

I notice some games say compatible with Vista, XP etc and don't list Windows 7.

Does that automatically mean I should not purchase them for my Windows 7 system?

I did buy a retro game pack of Atari stuff I think and it did not work on the O.S. I had then, (and got a refund (with a warning from Valve they won't refund ever again for incompatibility)) and some games I will expect with the compatibility checked in properties may well work.

There were some games in recent times I was interested in but W7 wasn't listed. Is there a quick way of determining what will and won't work?

Cheers,
Max

Valve should not be selling anything without clear system requirements.

All of their games should state:

OS: Windows® XP or higher

or something to that effect, which means XP, Vista and Windows 7. If it only lists a single OS, that's all they offer support for.

They're usually pretty good about this, if a game won't run on XP (for exmaple, it needs DX10 and has no DX9 support) then they usually have a fairly clear and bold notice, like this dog and pony show of a game (just don't read the game credits):

http://store.steampowered.com/app/10650/

Another good example using that game, it does not list Windows 7. The game does actually work jsut fine with Windows 7 (oddly enough I have a copy of that game), but there's absolutely no support for it on Win7 - the company that made the game (The Creative Assembly - Australia) no longer exists and the publishers (Sega) have no desire to support the product on Windows 7, so it's not listed.

Generally though, if something works on Vista it really should also work on Windows 7. If it only lists XP and not Vista or Win 7 I'd be a little more wary.

Normally the only reason it won't list Windows 7 is if it was released before.
You linked to Stormrise, a game that came out 3 months before Windows 7.
But any game that supports Vista will work under 7.

Cannon Fodder 3 has just been released:

Save 15% on Cannon Fodder 3 on Steam

But it lists as XP(SP2), so I assume that's a no go for W7, based on comments below (and thankyou for the advice).

Cheers,
Max

If in doubt, try to find the publishers/developers page or some kind of official website for the game.

CF3 is a bit of an odd case, its release has been shabby at best. The game has no official website, developed by an obscure Russian developer that does doesn't even list the game on their homepage (not a good sign), and published by a publisher that also doesn't want to mention the game on their site (alarm bells should be ringing!). Why would they not promote their own game?

Other websites (gamersgamte) list XP, Vista and Windows 7 as supported OSs but given it's low meta-critic score and near denial-of-existence by the developers and publishers alike it'd steer clear of it, it's probably never going to see any patches or support.

Like any purchase, you should do a bit of research before pulling the trigger.
