Default Valve's latest on Windows vs Linux

Valve on why they're favouring Linux over Windows 8 - PCGamesN

Quote:
“If you look at the way the world is going, where you see Apple completely in control of their system, and at least part of Windows 8 entirely controlled by the Microsoft App Store, Steam is going to be a little bit harder to do - both in the store aspect and in the content delivery aspect.”
...
“We want to continue developing in open platforms and so we’re looking around, and obviously Linux has become a very viable alternate platform. So we are now looking into doing Steam for Linux and supporting as many of our Steam games for Linux as we can.”

Microsoft Marketplace must really be putting the shivers up Steam.

I kinda brushed it off as hype, but read an article recently about the conditions of the app store and approval of programs etc (I don;t remember where sorry...) so it sounds worse than I thought for developers, especially those with competing ecosystems.

Gallant effort but I can't see large development houses making a Windows version and a Linux version, then supporting both on a regular basis. I think it'll be good for Indie titles. I personally loathe dual boot and my OS is essentially going to be what runs the most games I want to play. Anything else that doesn't require a beefy graphics card can be virtualised.

They don't need to make two versions. Just ditch DirectX. :S

Yes.
Ditch what is making games work exclusively on Windows, and make things more interesting for those of us that wishes to explore other OS options.

Also, Valve's own testing showed that they got better results with OpenGL than DirectX. In Windows.

The way I read it is that they want to open up more markets, not close ones they already have. I'd have to think that multi-OS development will become easier and more automated as it already as over the years.
