Unhappy Borderlands Bugs me

Borderlands use to be cool.

Like Metal Slug and a Gorillaz clip had a baby.

Have hardly had anytime to play games last few months and have played this one bits in peices over last week or so and was enjoying it.

I got to level 22 and I must of tripped some uber leet super special cool switch

because everything reset except my level. I could use the level 22 guns I just died easy ...far to easy

I've tried in online mode , reseting the char etc..I can't even level up any more..I have 1 skill point I can't spend..and I just dont think I can be arsed beating that friggin Mothrakk thing again.

gg

Edit: K I did have 1 skill point ..Looks that went walkies as well.

They were hoping to patch in a fix for that sometime. I empathise with you mate, and hope they sort it out soon.

Esky, if you can get in on a game hosted by some TOG friends that have higher level characters then you should be able to level up a new character pretty quickly (drags your level up real quick and you'll get the skill points to go with it). You can then jump back to SP or hosting a MP and just quickly run through the core quest line to bring you back up to roughly where you were. Likely only take one or two game sessions depending upon the level of the characters used to drag you up.

A few of us have done this with alts to avoid the drudge of the first 10-20 levels.

There is a savegame editor, you can restore your skillpoints using that...

Seems a bit dubious given what else it can do, does the Developer have a stance on that sort of thing? They were opening the game up to up to modders anyway though, I believe so. Hmmmm.

The long answer:

They can be as dubious as they like. The save format is totally open (no authenticated checksumming etc) so they obviously have no problem with it. If they did, they'd do what others do and host the save on their servers, or store a decryption key on the server used to decrypt a checksum.

The short answer:
They don't need to worry about savegame editors on consoles, so they didn't bother to implement any safeguards. After all, the PC port was only done because DNA is so close to PC code.

Incorrect use of "port". When a single development studio makes a game for multiple platforms and releases them within weeks of each other, nothing was "ported".

If Gearbox made Borderlands for 360 and PS3 then some other company made a PC version 6 months later, that would be a port. If they're made at the same time then maybe you can claim it was a game designed for consoles.

However, in a situation were there are 3 release platforms, the PC gets the least love because:

A) There is no strict testing process by a 3rd party company to approve the game for release on the PC. Microsoft and Sony audit all menus and features of games before letting anyone publish on their platform. If they encounter a single crash while playing the game they fail it you have to re-submit. If something a simple as a tool-tip is wrong (for example, if a 360 tool-tip says "push the Triangle button...", they fail it.

B) It's a lot easier to release a patch for PC.

Still, 2K have really dropped the ball on the PC release/patches, as they're funding the studio (Gearbox) it's probably up to them when or if or how a PC patch is released. 2K should also have their own testing process for the game, as they are the publishers it is on their worth that they release the title.

True, it's not a technical "port", it's just a different compile target, with slightly different code in sections to account for platform and hardware differences.

It is a design port however, it was designed and balanced for consoles from the ground up - this is obvious in certain areas, especially difficulty balancing, I'm sure the way the enemies behave and the number of them is designed to make the game playable with crappy console controllers, not mouse (which = lotsa crits). Nothing in the design was changed or rebalanced in the PC version.

You can bet all their playtesting and prototyping was done on consoles, which is why it's a console "port" rather than a PC game "ported" to console.

Don't get me wrong, there is nothing "wrong" with that, it's still a good game - but that's why it's missing things like protected saves even though it's multiplayer.

Maybe not a technical port, but yeah; its blatantly obvious from the menu system that it was idealogically designed for consoles.
