Yeah, Steam needs a 2.0 overhaul for stuff like this. Just complain on the steam forums, they'll no doubt add that feature eventually.
It would also be nice to have a "looking for a game" type status you could set that would auto clear after you launch a game or an hour passes to let people know you're fine with getting invites and so on.
I've also wanted a system to see which people on my friends list have which games. If I can see before even launching a game (say, I select the game and it scrolls out a panel listing all friends online who own the game) I can contact a few and organize a game rather then just starting a game and spamming invites to everyone. With 200 people on my friends list it's impossible to remember who has what.
