Launching a game takes ages while capped

I'm capped atm, which sucks

I've noticed it takes AGES for a Steam game to launch - what is it doing? Its at 100%, so its not updating, I would expect it to just start up as normal.

Happening on Company of Heroes, and I've had it on Torchlight as well.

Steam normally launches itself in online mode. Have you tried launching it offline to see if that makes a difference ?

Are you implying it takes longer while you are capped, or just that steam games in general always (perhaps of late) take a long time to start.

I'm not sure what or if steam games require to download anything from steam while starting, but they probably do periodic checks to ensure steam is running at the very least.

The other thing is steam in general has exploded with the increase in games available and this may potentially be adding traffic to the whole process, slowing down access to steam servers.

One thing I have noticed is taking out one of my 2 x 2Gb sticks of RAM (having a problem) increases the game and map load times considerably.

This. Steam has loaded, its running. Just wondering what exactly is happening when I try to launch a game. Normally (uncapped), it just starts straight up.

How long is "ages"?

10 seconds?
1 minuite?

Does it happen if you set your friends status to "offline".

Did you try the offline mode suggestion?

If it still happens in offline mode then you can safely rule out it being a networking issue and look into other causes.

Not sure about Company of Heroes, but I know Torchlight will check and download your saves from the "Steam Cloud" each time you launch it and uploads it again when you quit.

"Ages" is > 5 mins (probably closer to 10)

Maybe its something like what Spice is describing.

That seems unusually long. I do experience a brief launch period but its usually no more than 10-15secs top (not including initial setup after install). Have you tried cleaning up your system a bit (run CCleaner for example, defrag, etc.), may not make much of a difference but it couldn't hurt either.
