Well I have still been playing this game as regular as possible to give it a fair go.
I finally got onto a multi player that worked and didn't lock up at start. I must say that the map was larger and therefor better in alot of ways, but still found that the old RTS tactics of go-go-go applied. I did find the ruses to be a little bit more effective against real players than the AI however. When clooaking with camo net against the AI, it always seems to directly counter the units you build regardless (air, artillery, etc) which can be frustrating, because you cannot hit it with a surprise, plus I find that the AI doesn't appear to give a bugger about the false invasion forces or false bases. In all fairness though, it is hard to get a good AI in any game. Even RO and BF1942 (which are not RTS) have AI that do some really weird stuff. I also remember AOE 1 & 3, as well as Warcraft series and a few others that got frustrating, so the AI is not a be all - end all problem. Also in the multiplayer, I was one of those that set up a basic defense and then built like buggery under camo. Because one player on our side dropped out on start, we ended up 2 against 3. The other bloke on my team appeared to be on the same wave length as myself. The game was on a time limit and with the points that the other team got against us, they were declared winners, even though we had nailed them down to less than a dozen units in total and wiped out all of their buildings. They were as good as gone and if we had one more minute, we would have nailed them completely, so it was a bit frustrating to fight back 2 V's 3 and be declared the losers. Upon the finish one bloke typed in that we were spamming and the like and then left. I explained to the others, who up till then were unaware, that I built a heap of admin buildings at the back of my base (each putting in $1 per minute) therefor guaranteeing me a regular income. I think I had about $15k as well as a heap of units by the end. They were surprised and OK about it and all ended well, as I also explained that you can save the game and check it over after.
I will admit that the game has grown on me slightly. Probably partially because of being WWII based and the fact that I am learning to use infantry and paratroopers more. But the fact is, it doesn't seem to break free of the "typical" RTS and that to me has its limitations in the excitement dept.
