Default Steam & Source games comming to Mac - Official Announcement

Valve announced today it will bring Steam, Valve's gaming service, and Source, Valve's gaming engine, to the Mac.

What I love about all this is the cross-platform ownership. If you already own all of Valve's games you can download and install the native Mac versions without having to re-purchase them just for that platform!

The only company that's done this previously has been Blizzard and I'm glad to see Valve follow that same train of thought.

They so should have released it for Linux at the same time. That would really make the Linux market take off. My gaming needs is the only thing that keeps me using Windows. Go OpenGL!

What I do find odd about this though is that they'd release for Mac before PS3, OSX still only has a 5% market share of all PCs, then again the biggest % of those are probably office PCs which don't play games, and I'm fairly sure you can't actually buy a Mac without a half-decent graphics card nowadays. Maybe there's more too it than the overall 5% OS market share or maybe OpenGL gaming on OSX/Linux is a stepping stone towards Valve doing in-house PS3 titles as well.

THE BEST part...all valve games are computer multiplat ie: You own the PC version you can play the Mac version. In combo with Steam Cloud this means you can play Portal 2 at lunch at work on your PC then go home and pick right up at the same spot on your Mac... fairly MAJOR development

no word yet as to whether this is backwards applied ie: to OBox games

I wonder if this will include boxed PC games you have bought at for example JB Hifi or EB games and registered with Steam.

I would think so as I saw that the install detects the OS and unpacks as mac or PC

I just remembered that the Steam store is now also selling Dell Alienware gaming machines, perhaps they have also worked out a deal with Apple to sell Macs?

Huh, I haven't seen any Alienware computers in the Steam store? Link to this?

EDIT: Found it:http://store.steampowered.com/hardware/alienware/
Wow, that makes more sense now. If Steam would sell Apple computers that would be a boost. Maybe even specific gaming Macs.

There's actually a heap of different things they could explore with the steam website, it's a very popular place for gamers to browse so I wouldn't be surprised in the future to see all sorts of different things on there from console games to software bundled with razer mice or logitech headsets and so on. I'm not saying that'll defiantly happen but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it did.
