Angry Steam and game updates

Tell me I'm doing this wrong!

Was having issues starting Steam and COD Black Ops today so I thought "I know, I'll try and unistall and reinstall Steam"

I unistalled and reinstalled Steam only to find that Black Ops was also unistalled!

I reinstalled BlackOps from disck and now Steam is downloading an 8GB update for it!!!

wtf? 6+ hours to go on a Cable Extreme account - surely this is not right?

Barras before you un-install steam go to your steam directory......ie C\program files\steam\steamapps ,now copy the entire steamapps folder and store it elsewhere.
Now when you reinstall steam you only have to copy the steamapps folder back to the new steam directory.........what I do next is start steam and go to each game I play and go to their property tab and 'check local file''verify game cache' and you are ready to go without downloading the game again.
I regularly make a backup copy of my steam apps folder

Also if you are just having issues with a particular game do the same......right click on the game in the steam menu (steam view games library) and go to 'properties','local files tab','verify integrity of game cache'.
Once that is done run the 'defragment cache files'

I find that a complete re-install of Steam (even if your common directory is completely intact) makes Steam believe that games haven't been installed.

As Beavis suggested, I'll always do a verify cache on a game before I launch it on a re-install. On occasions where it's decided that it's going to download some huge amount of Steambytes, a verify cache will normally satisfy it (unless those files really are missing or corrupt).

If you didn't try deleting the blob file, I'd give that a try next time instead of a re-install. Normally forces Steam to update and correct itself. May have to do a reboot after it.

the order I always use when things go wrong (tho Purg had to remind me of the blob). If the step does not fix it i move on to the next step.

1. Restart Steam
2. Verify game cache for problem game
3. delete clientregistry.blob (well rename it actually)
4. verify cache again
5 reboot PC

For blackops update yesterday I completed all 5 steps and on restart it did an install routine and started working
