Default Larger than normal updates

I've had a few patches download for a few games that are bigger than what other people are getting. Today a 90MB Section 8 update was 5GB for me. Recently a small (<50MB) magicka patch was over 2GB for me; one of the blackops patches was only a few MB for others but for me was 9GB.

Any ideas why this is happening alot to my steam client?

Is Steam installed properly? It sounds like Steam isn't read/writing properly from the install location.

I would recommend a clean install of Steam as a first step.
Cleanly reinstalling Steam - Valve Developer Community

If possible, install it to a non-OS drive.

Happens to me occasionally too.

3.3Gb Team Fortress 2 update just a couple of days ago.

I'm thinking some sort of corruption does it. I did try verify cache before attempting the large download, but didn't help.

thanks for the suggestion.

Have got as far as installing steam and when it goes to do the first install update it terminates with this error:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...5322-QYZB-5344

this has happened in the past and running steam.exe from the steam folder has usually fixed it. But this may be an indication that you are correct and I have some permission problems...i wonder if AVG is causing the issue.

I'll keep going and see what happens. If pain persists I will try the separation of the OS option however as this is a ASUS gaming laptop that is a major bit of partitioning surgery for me and a last resort.

Quite possibly. Add your Steam folder to the exceptions/not scanned list.

I gave up on AVG, using Avast without AVG's overheads and happy.. not sure if it could be related though

Sometimes Steam lies about the size too. I've had the big 3-5GB showing but when it finishes downloading and you look at the amount downloaded it is usually much less.

I didn't allow it to install the 2nd lot of 3.4gb, and now today it says it wants to do a 9,553.2Mb update!

There's a couple of other games also wanting huge updates.
