steam Portal 2 gift problem

I just bought a 2 pack and sent 1 to my dad - when he tried to redeem it he gets:

Firefox can't find the file at steam://ackMessage/ackGuestPass/<<SECRETCODEHERETHATIMNOTGOINGTOPOST>>.

pasting in the original http url to Firefox just ends up redirecting to this steam:// url and we get the same result.

any ideas?

gift it to his email address. I often have trouble gifting games through steam but the email way seems to always work

have you tried it in the steam client rather than a web browser?

hmmm - i logged into steam with his account and redeemed it - worked first time - must be something with his system....

EDIT - gifted him PAM just now too and the problem is with his firefox seurity...pasting the link into IE and allow IE to open steam and it was fine. I could not paste a URL into the steam client address bar.

It looks to me like the Steam URL handler isn't properly installed (so the system isn't passing the url to steam).

He should probably backup his games (or steamapps directory + all GCF files) then reinstall steam and copy/restore games.

Disagree MB. If IE is handling it fine then it is probably a browser specific setting as SJ alluded to ...

What I don't understand is why you didn't just gift it straight to his account from your list of friends ... unless he isn't a friend

agree Jig...Gift in steam client first then resort to email if the gift doesn't show up in steam (which is sometimes the case) Don't think I've ever used the web page for gifting

+1 to Jigoku. Firefox has some funky anomalies when it comes to what it can and can't do in Steam.

haha - good question to which i cant give an answer - thats how i normally do it and in fact did that for the next game. It may have been that he wasn't online and or must not have been showing up at the time - or my eyes were too tired....
