Question Steam Mover

Hi Folks

Has anyone used the above program mentioned in the 13 tips sticky?

My query was thus - Currently i have my Steam and games on a separate 'games' HD but when i backup my system it wants to backup the whole of my 'games' HD as well due i think to the steam connection.

If i was to use the above program and install Steam to my system drive with the games linked via the program still on my 'games' HD would this enable me to only backup my system drive during a backup and not my other hd.

Sorry if this makes no sense it was clear in my head but trying to explain what i meant was more difficult.

To back up my steam i just go in and manually copy the "your steam user name here" folder to another drive.

There's your account named one, but some are in the public>steamapps>etc. too. Sorry Baw but I haven't used that. I just manually copy the steamapps and my account name folder under >*>Steam like DalienX does. After that you need to install steam on the new system, copy the files over, then verify cache files.

You only need to backup the "steamapps" folder. Nothing else.

Yeah mmm its really a system windows backup i am having difficulty with as for some reason it wants to backup my games drive also and the linkage to steam is the only thing i can think of.

Just would rather i did not need to do that but maybe its just the way of things.

Thanks for all the input.

Can't you just change your backup software settings to ignore certain folders?

Using Steam Mover wouldn't work. It sets up symbolic links and as such the system won't recognise the data as being in a different location.

+1

There should be options of what you're backing up. Usually people only do the OS stuff (Drivers and settings) and not the whole HDD unless there's some special reason to backup other things too.
