Default Steam operating strangely.

I'm apparently downloading Civ V demo. Never authorised it myself and already have Civ V installed.

Problem is, I can't cancel it.

  • Exit Steam.
  • Navigate to ...\Steam\steamapps
  • Delete ncf files related to demo (sid meiers civ V demo.ncf perhaps?); there may be more than one.
  • Navigate to ..\Steam\steamapps\common
  • Delete folder for demo
  • Restart Steam.

Did as suggested, Steam just puts it back in. Even tried deleting .blob. No good. :\

Just let it finish I guess. Would hate to be on a small plan.

Thanks for the try.

It would be unexpected but perhaps they share required files.

You could also try this link:

Does it show up in your steam library? You might be able to uninstall it / cancel it from there.

That's the strange thing - doesn't show up at all. Didn't show up in the downloads section (as above even though it's clearly downloading something) only showed up when I moused over the Steam icon. Didn't show in my library as downloading and not showing up now that it's downloaded.

I pre-ordered Civ 5 and never touched the demo. If I go to the Civ 5 store page it even gives me the option to install the demo - not the usual 'Run' option if it's installed. Had I not spotted excessive network traffic at the time, I would not have known that it was being installed.

I've never heard of that happening, you're right that's crazy weird. Have you considered copying your game files off, uninstalling / deleting steam and then reinstalling? You should be able to start the install for them, copy your game files back over and it'l just verify game cache files. Actually there's a steam FAQ about it, better to check over that at this LINK if you descide to.

I may consider it if it happens again.

Few games to install there.

A few weeks back there was a Steam update and at least 15 of my games started downloading ~25GB all up on the restart. Might be time for another cull of games I've neglected for awhile.

I've only ever seen that happening before where I've installed a demo, then subsequently bought the game without having uninstalled the demo. At some later stage it'll download updates for the now "hidden" demo - mostly less than a couple of hundred megs though, nothing anywhere near the size you've experienced Purg.

Oh, and you guys aren't trying hard enough - 550 GB.
