Related to this, how does the server currently fare, generally? Does it have CPU and memory to spare or is it living on the edge? I assume an FTB server would consume more resources than a vanilla minecraft server?

The cpu usage in general is a little higher but not bad. That might account for a small laggy effect, but shouldn't stop playing. The machine hasn't had demands from TF2 or DODS over the last month so it has mainly been us. Nothing has gone overboard that I have seen since I returned.

Have you taken a hard look at garbage collection? The default Java garbage collector is absolute rubbish for something like Minecraft in general, and really bad with some of the mods in this mod pack. It very rarely matters client side, but can be a real issue on a server.

In the interest of preventing further problems before they get serious, I'd like minerduck to take a look at his place. It's currently dropping my FPS severly just looking at it, and being in it is worse. There is a portal from a portal gun in there which I think can be a problem, also a crystal chest which I've read can be problematic. So maybe look into doing something about that. And possibly turn off some machines. I don't know how rotary macerators and such that has to be on all the time affects the server.

I would start with the portal, I have a feeling it is to blame and I would even suggest removing portal guns from the server entirely unless people are very much against that.

My personal experience of portal guns has been death, lost items, and accidentally ending up at someone else's portal! They are certainly 'experimental'. I think their best use is as decoration on a portal gun stand. Jetpacks and Myst books do a pretty good job replacing any benefit gained from Portal Guns.

If any member thinks that any machine or device run by another member is contributing badly to the lag on the FTB server, please approach the member personally. This can be through a PM or in-game with a /tell message. If you cannot reach them, then inform one of the Division's Admin team in a like manner. Out of courtesy, please do not use these forums for that purpose. It is not the way that TOG handles such issues.
