FTB: Mystcraft
A number of players are starting to see the benefits from using Mystcraft as a way to teleport between worlds (http://www.theoldergamers.com/forum/...al-system.html) and between locations (http://www.theoldergamers.com/forum/...oject-ftb.html). Given that general players don't have access to the /tp command in FTB, this is a great static alternative.
Mystcraft also has other abilities. Primarily, it can create new dimensions/worlds/ages, sometimes to design, sometimes randomly. One such world is that to which the Myst portal at spawn travels, which is referred to in the first link above. I am sure many of you would love to go creating and exploring new worlds. However, each new world adds to the load of our servers, and depending on how you create them, they may never be able to be revisited again. While it might seem like fun, for a community server, it isn't. We want any world that is created to be used by all. We also don't want to have to save too many worlds. Therefore, we ask that if you wish to do more than just use the already established portal system in Mystcraft, please tell the Admin team.[1] Do not create new MystCraft worlds yourself without permission. We have been liaising with people like Irimar who know more about Mystcraft than we do. Enjoy Sorontar [1] i.e. we don't mind people establishing new book portals to link between the existing main Mystcraft world and Overworld locations or the Link Modifier idea. |

So at quick glance, it looks like I can create a linking book in Mystcraft, go home, go exploring way far away and deep down, use the linking book to pop back to Mystcraft and then use an existing intersection for a quick trip home?
|
That works. I'd recommend taking the linking book to spawn first and using the link modifier. If you use a book without the 'following' attribute added, it will stay where you used it from.
|
first thing I did was make a link book home and go to spawn and use the link modifier 'inter linkling' and 'following' :D now im guessing this would be server side the 'Adventurer backpack' has to have the contence edited as it has no set items to hold can we get books / linking books added to this ?
(there are to sets of all backpack small and large) |
Re. Mystcraft and mob spawners
Just a quick question. Obviously in the case of the Ender-dragon I understand, but if I were to design a mob trap in the Nether that dropped Balzes into a pool of water in the overworld, would that be ok? Obviously to operate it requires that I'm in the Nether so as to cause the Blazes to spawn. This means it shouldn't be a drain on the server at all and would be a good way to farm blazes rods (which have a number of uses). |

On Frontier, this isn't true simply because Bukkit has got around this Nether/Overworld travel problem by deactivating it. Mystcraft gates might not have the same issue. I don't know. Personally, I would rather see players get creative with how to kill blazes in the Nether, rather than transport them between worlds to kill them. Sorontar |
Fair enough Sor. And I was thinking Mystcraft portals because you can make them any size, shape or orientation (vertical/horizontal). Especially with the maintain momentum option on the link modifier this allows for some pretty crafty traps.
Another possible use would be as a protective moat laid horizontally around important buildings in the overworld. Pursuing mobs would fall through and be teleported, say to a dungeon under your base, fall to their deaths and leave loot for you to collect (insert elaborate loot collection system with water flow and an obsidian pipe. All with no damage to your building. Coupled with a jet pack (or pro jumping skills) could make for a cool defensive base design. No idea what load on the server Myst portals have though. |
I can just add in that myst portals definitely does not keep a chunk loaded. When I had my delivery system link through the myst world I had to portal over there myself constantly to keep the carts flowing. Same with my lava pump in the nether, it won't do anything unless I'm actually there, despite a myst portal being right next to it.

Now, this isn't for use on the TOG server, just for my own one. But does anyone have any advice on how the Myst world was created to be stable on the TOG FTB server? I'm assuming it's a server properties file that was edited, but I'm trying to do it 'vanilla' and have had a number of really scary close calls while both visitng rand worlds to collect symbols, as well as writing a few options to try them out.
Essentially, all I'm looking to do is create a stable Myst world to use as a portal hub. Doesn't have to be full sized like the TOG one. It's a real shame the TOG server is too large to handle this being available to everyone, because it's real edge of your seat stuff exploring and mining while meteors rain down from the sky, hordes of creepers are chasing you and the ground starts falling into the void all around. And I thought that hsssss of a creeper behind me or an enderman scream were scary... - OJ |
