You can always just start your quarry about 8-9 blocks down - leaves a cover of 3 or 4.

Ah ha ha. Nice one.

My quarry pit is so large you deserve to fall in if you don't see it =)

But then, it's not a quarry outside the city, so probably nothing to worry about =)

Can you quarry in the nether too? I was thinking about going there and setting one up, what's the etiquette involved for placement when quarrying in other worlds/dimensions?

The automated quarry on FTB requires power and a collection point for all the blocks you dig up. I guess most people started doing them at ground level for convenience.

ease and there is less chance to destroy ores that are located in the top few layers,

Yeah, less to dig out, and for me the ability to get sand for glass. Although I later found out you can macerate cobble (or was it gravel?) into sand so it's not that useful any more. Nowadays I first dig it out using a filler and then start the quarry.

Yeah cobblestone in the macerator gives you sand. That's what I started doing with my insane amount of cobble. That and a void pipe lol

I quarry on the surface for a few reasons. The main one being my quarries are all solar powered.

I solved the issue of covering them not long ago; I mine out the ocean floor now. Though once this one is torn down I think I'll be done for awhile got a solid supply of everything I need.
