Mindcrack ore's / Tools

Hey all,

All these new type's of Ores are great and I am saving some up (minus the huge amount that melted along with my face in an underground lava lake).

What type of tools should I be shooting for? In the original game, diamand tools were the fastest and lasted the longest. Is it the same now?

It seems that diamond is even more rare on this FTB server, or maybe it is just bad luck.

Any hints would be great as I start to gather everything I need.

I am using diamond pickaxe atm to get my ore, but i know that a few of the guys use quarries or mining lasers.. ..i think they take a bit to get though. If you chuck an enchantment on it, really makes a difference too.

I guess it's personal choice, but I love the diamond drill... and recommend people aim towards that to start with.

It's a bit harder to make now of course then when I made mine, but the advantage with it is that it is like a diamond pick, but it won't ever wear out - it's just charged and reused. It can't be enchanted, but it means you're not wasting diamonds on replacing picks - you can always make the drill to use on everything other than ores, and use an enchanted pick on those.

There is a chainsaw that does the same to replace an axe.

Diamonds are definitely not rare in the caverns (world you can enter from the spawn portal room), go to the caverns and head for level 10-12 pretty much anywhere in that world and you will find many large veins of diamonds (largest for me has been 20+ blocks) which if you have an enchanted axe with fortune 3 can get you anywhere between 30-60 diamonds

Thanks for that tip Deep.
I too have been struggling to find the shiney that I need. I'm not a huge fan of manual mining so I've been working towards a quarry, wich needs a fair few diamonds to get started in the first place..

I shall pack some torches and picks and head into the cavern world next I'm on for a search. I'll make sure I don't strip too close to spawn and pass on any good info too DDay.

I'm up for an expedition, I havnt had much game-time lately so my stocks are real low. Will try to be on tonight because I'm busy all weekend.
From memory I have a few diamonds and I've made 1 diamond gear. I have the mats for the other gears I think in chests but I still need to make a diamond pick and another diamond gear.
I was on abit when the server started up but have had some RL stuff sucking time of late, I jumped back in when we moved out of the city and prettymuch started again.. I'm still living in vanilla MC, no cool boots or jetpack, stone tools, basic stuff haha
I do spend too much time wandering around gawking and exploring though, this is why I'm glad Deep posted that because on my next adventure I'll head to the caverns and do some adventuring on those levels

I only recently got my first diamonds in the overworld from a branch mine i started from a cavern i found under my plot. From there i have found so much ore its ridiculous - with a macerator you get twice as much so from one expedition i managed to get 120 iron ingots.

Remember on overworld diamonds only appear below level 16 - so you have to dig deep! Im mining on level 11/12 right now, once my dig is complete i will do the same for level 8/7 under my existing dig. Next project will be to collect the nearby lava to fuel my machines

Expedition to the caverns? That could be fun!! Wont be on tonight, but maybe tomorrow and a few times over the weekend, maybe monday.. ..idk

Yeh it's my own fault, havnt had the time to have a real good lock-in mine session yet but no complaint. Looking forward to getting the quarry up so I can just muck around and build a bit. The area I've colonised has some very good mats nearby and I'm sure underground, including a lava spring. I did have my eye on a silverwood tree too I was saving but that is just a stump now, missed that boat.
So many plans not enough time, minecraft in a nutshell!
