There is bound to be some sort of block that can do this in ftb, but I just don't know which.

Only other idea I have is to build a BUD switch. They are big complicated things using "bugs" in pistons to detect when there is a block update. If you place it next to the sapling it will detect both when it grows into a tree, when it's removed and when a new one is placed. You can google minecraft BUD switch if you're interested.

Another option with EK79 showed is to use steves carts and assemble a modular tree cutter-sapling planter that runs on rails.. ..looked pretty cool! A few options floating around!

Taking a look at BUD switch now '

Its pretty cool, here is a link: http://minecraft.wonderhowto.com/how...hines-0138722/

Basically a low key switch! Can set it so that when the block chances as a result of harvesting, it activates a deployer (utilising a time delay to prevent the deployer action triggering it, i think...)

As you said this it occurred to me that you can probably use turtles as well.

Sit it in front of the tree.
Code:
if (turtle.detect() == false) then
    turtle.place()
end
Should work with saplings.

They look relatively simple to build.. .unless gregtech hasnt got in there?

Turtles - Technic Pack Wiki

Another great idea though!! Good example of cross-mod integration! Its excellent as you can place a turtle at the base of each tree to plant saplings if the space is empty.. ..loggers will chop the trees down and you can use pipes to transport the logs to storage/processing where they can be used for fuel - which can then feed the turtles!! Love it!!

Only question i would have for this technique is what impact do turtles have in regards to lag? For that matter, how would the other techniques compare..

Love all the great ideas guys!! Thanks heaps!

Turtle - FTB Wiki

Better yet, if you put saplings in slot 1 and bonemeal in slot 2,

Code:
if (turtle.detect() == false) then
 turtle.select(1)
 turtle.place()
 sleep(5)
 turtle.select(2)
 turtle.place()
end
Will plant and then bonemeal the tree. The sleep directive will pause for 5 seconds. This will give the server a chance to process something else for 5 seconds so that the turtle doesn't monopolize server cycles.

How often does it run turtle.detect() though? I take it that is inside some main loop? In that case I would suggest not running that more often than let's say every 60 seconds.

Step two would be to have the turtle keep track of 4 trees in a circle around it.

Step three could let the turtle keep track of a large forest area and handle the logging itself, removing the need for a logger altogether. But that would require some fancy coding.

That was intended as a code fragment, not a whole program. You are, of course, right, you'll want a delay on how often that runs.

You could plant trees all around and use turtle.detectLeft(), turtle.detectRight(), etc.

The Steve's cart tree farm we have at home only works with vanilla brand trees. Definately doesn't do rubber, and I doubt it does the spruce etc.
