I was on the right track then. Cheers for the explanation. It's easy for such selfless things and shared architecture to be lost track of by those of us on the purely fun side of the fence.

Thanks goes out to Exe and Solutions First. Donations are a good idea. Considering the amount I'm playing in this division will be looking into that.

We are always grateful for the free hosting that Exe provides us. As outlined in the sticky, Our Worlds - servers, maps, claims, downloads, Solutions First does have a paypal account if want to help lessen their load as such. Exe also has a Steam account if you want to reward him directly for his charity. Such donations back to them is purely voluntary.

How exactly does it work on servers like this? Can you for example limit one application to use a single CPU core or does it always balance out on several? Is Minecraft perhaps already limited to a single CPU? Is it too much if it uses even that?

I was thinking if we were able to somehow limit in hardware how much CPU the Minecraft server uses it transforms into our problem only and not exe's.

I've been doing some research on causes of server lag with FTB/Mindcrack servers.

Large machine constructions with lots of entities being transported in pipes.
- Players need to minimize pipes and tubes AND limit how many items are in said pipe at a time. For example if your base has a few hundred separate items (a stack is treated as one item) in pipes this uses the same cpu load as that many creepers.

Solar Ultimate Hybrid Solar Panels placed but not connected.
- simple this one connect it up or put it in a chest. Soaryn had one on the forgecraft server causing 32 log entries a second ( most likely was just a glitch but caution pays off)

Uncontrolled mob grinders ie those that aren't turned off with a redstone signal.
- build/move your mob grinders to chunks that are normally unloaded. In normal FTB the solution would be tier5 soulshard grinders only that require a preasure plate to activate and no automatic farming grinders.
Mo'creatures' conflicts with vanilla and other with custom spawning mods doesn't help with this either as it causes more mobs to spawn in chunks and at times due to it's maximum spawn number no creatures in other areas.
Pyro on the Mindcrack server was causing block lag because his iron golem farm had 1700 golems in it.

Poorly placed ic2 eu cabling. Grid patterns are bad . (including copper and glass fibre)
-Players really need to paint wiring and create proper circuits. IC2 and by default Gregtech use a requesting system to send EU to machines. Each machine requests EU and this is sent via the cable to the supply/batt box. With multiple paths for a request to travel the cpu usage is increased exponentially at each fork/intersection. Grids are bad.

Thaumcraft nodes and flux when mismanaged.
-Always practice safe Thaumcraft, do not build towers at the largest node you can find as nodes refill from node larger than themselves and natural crystal deposits.
Silver wood trees CAUSE flux when planted.
Merging nodes causes flux and lowers total vis in an area, merging nodes where the largest node is less than 125 will reduce the size of the combined node instead of increase.
Hopefully when we are updated we will have the Thaumic bees addon which have bees who eat flux.

Insufficient power to IC2/Gregtech machines.
- Power your machines with the correct packet size and total EU. A machine that requires 128eu/t can be supplied on a LV(32eu/t) circuit as long as it it getting 4x32eu packets per tick. When we see server announcements about a machine grumbling the server log file is being spammed which can cause excessive ram and cpu usage.

Multiple dimensions (worlds)
- We have this under control as players can't make them.
- Are the current dimensions being used enough to justify the extra ram and cpu usage? i personally would like to eventually have buildings on all the dimensions including the end .

The above is just my opinions based on some research. The admins would be able list more server specific problems and solutions i'm sure.

I did not know silverwood trees caused flux. That is whack. I'm glad that mod is being revised. I was advocating for the merging of the silverwood/pure nodes so that they could eventually swallow the dark nodes, but maybe this is more trouble than it's worth? Those bees sound awesome.

Sor as soon as I opened this thread again I just thought I really hope you enjoy all that Linuxy admin stuff, because otherwise your job sux. Props to the team and thanx always to Exe. Maybe we should throw a party when it's done.

And thanks for all the time you put into research for us Gedarn.

There is so much I enjoy about Mindcrack - I hope it can work.

At the moment we are looking at letting you guys back on perhaps around Thursday. The flux is being cleaned up but we have shifted to testing updating Mindcrack. This might have some gotchas due to changes, so we might have to give you a day or so to adjust some of your machines etc to minimise the effect of the change before we actually update. We will get back to you once we have tested whether anything actually changes.

This will be a confusing week with Mojang updating vanilla Minecraft as well. I still plan to have a community talk, but getting the server sorted out is priority.

Sorontar

ps. Don't worry, not all the testing needs to be done on Exe's machines. I have plenty of help from the Admin team on their own pcs and Exe's machines.

The dimensions only get loaded when there are players in them, so if they're not being used, they shouldn't be using anything but disk space.

I believe Thaumic bees will have to be added manually, as its not part of Mindcrack yet (to my knowledge).

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Thaumic Bees is not in Mindcrack. It is part of Direwolf20 and FTB Ultimate.
