It's a vicious circle where the genre doesn't get the same amount of sales as an FPS would and therefore the developers would need to do with a whole lot less resources that would allow for all the addons that one would require.
I could think of many things that it could improve on and I'm sure if they had the same budget as the next Battlefield game they would.
But fundamentally the only part where it really didn't deliver is it' ability to move around the sub a bit more freely which I would think would not have been that hard to achieve.
Yes the gameplay is fundamentally the same but thats the case with a lot of simulators, flying, racing you name it. The simulator's world keeps looking better and therefore feels more real and ads to the enjoyment I get from playing a sim.
Anyway, not trying to change your mind here, just saying that for me personally the things that it improves on are a good enough reason to buy it.
