It is a great game, but be warned it can be very addictive.

I did the 14 day trial nearly three years ago. I remember saying to RnR at the time, " M8 I don't think this game is for me".... lol

Yeah thanks to RnR for a great addiction.

Nice write up Sytez...

for all those interested, one of the 'rotating' screenshots in the article features a fleet of over 400 players waiting to engage the enemy...it gives a sense of the epic 'scale' of EvE (and hints at some of the lag that can be had)....

btw - have we advised CCP of this review? - they often feature reviews such as this from sizeable gaming communities and it might help promote both EvE and TOG.

(if anyone is interested, of the 400+ that engaged the hostile fleet, my recollection is of only about 50 that survived...it was a hell of a battle)

I would have given the noob friendliness of EVE a 2/5 instead of 3/5. But that is only coz there is a lot of depth to it, so on the flip side it seems very rewarding for more advanced players.
There is grinding for noob players btw (like me) but I think it will become less as you get more skillz.

Thanks for the comment Stalin. My thoughts rest on that middle divide "3/5" as I can not imagine much more that CCP may do for a new player. To lose the depth of the game would be necessary (IMHO) to simplify the startup and thus seems, for me, to sit on that middle score of 3. I believe the measures they have taken to walk a player along the startup has made great progress due to that, I would mark it maybe a tad higher than 3... maybe 3.5 . However, IMO, there is a bit of a lull... from new player out of help chat to joining a corporation of quality. That lull (IMO) is where more players are effected than the start (Start = a bit of puppy love). The transition really depends on contacts made during the starting time and the guidance received. With that, it drops my score to the "3".
*I'll place a bit of a disclaimer here for giggles... LOL I began a couple years back and it has advanced since then. For those players before my start time... they have stated the start up help was an even tougher learning curve...

If there is a "grind" to be found in the game, it may be a product of repeated mission running. However, my comment related towards - a players is not forced to constantly build experience points sitting at a spawn point. A player's skill progress are not effected by what the player opts to do. Not bound to MMO history of kill, kill, kill - rest, kill, kill, kill - rest... and eventually gain a level.
Though on your point, I agree, if one chooses the "mission running" a sense of the "grind" is present.
