Got this on preorder. Cannot wait.
Minor note.. UT2007 has LESS gametypes than 2004 out of the box in contrast to the claim of the article. They are doing away with Domination and Bombing Run this time round to focus more time on the remaining and new gametype. |

I'm not keen on UT2007 anymore. I was excited about it until I read Mark Rein's interview from E3 this year. He talks about how they dumbed down the game to better appeal to console gamers (it's a dual-release for both PC and the PS3). They're making concessions to provide more vehicles and vehicle options for console gamers because the gamepad 'supposedly' is better for controlling them while they're going to focus on infantry-combat more for PC gamers.
They're removing many of the sweet, sick moves you could do (wall-jumps, 360-turns, rocket-jumping, to name a few) because the PS3 players with their gamepads wouldn't be able to pull them off. ![]() The final straw is that they're going to be providing exclusive extra content for PS3 players as opposed to PC players, initially, though Mark did say that later on it would definitely be a 'possibility' to port that extra exclusive content back to the PC. And then the straw that broke the camel's back (to keep the analogy going here, LOL) is that they stupidly ganked the Assault mode (just like they foolishly did in UT2003) in order to create a hybrid mode that mixes Assault and Onslaught. This new mode does sound fun, but most gamers I talk to are annoyed not to have straight Assault mode available as an alternative. Overall my enthusiasm for this title dropped from about a 8 out of 10, to a 4 out of 10. Sure it'll have great graphics but as we all know, all too well, great graphics do not necessarily make a great game. ![]()

Here I was getting excited about the next unreal... and its all about UT07. lol.
I agree with whytefang on all his points. On the positive side I really like the idea of a sort of rolling 1 on 1 server that'll be intersting if done right. I want a game I can get into competatively. I want to see some rankings done properly, teams/guilds etc. Surely, they haven't ignored community links all together have they? Another untested mode, which no one knows is any good except for their limited closed testing? They keep making decent engines and forgetting to put a good game on top, its starting to wear. Every year they fail to learn the same stupid lesson, fix your dam design people, work out a way of making a game fun and interesting for more than 5 seconds (and "modes" doesnt cut it!). go talk to guildwars people about engaging your fan base (and take bliz with you). cross my fingers. |

I'm not sure you do understand the 'Tony Hawk bits'. It's not suddenly a console game because it's got something that looks like a skateboard in it. The hoverboards are simply a mechanism for letting the player get to the action quickly in a fun way. How often have you been chasing after a vehicle on a big map to get a lift to the objective (presuming you've ever played an FPS with vehicles in it) only to be left cursing the driver and having to go on foot? This hoverboard device removes that part of the game that people don't enjoy, and replaces it with fun.
So they're dumbing down the console version? Nothing new there.. and this affects PC gamers how? Anyway, what's left to dumb? This style of game is the dumbest there is - and that's the attraction. The only dumbing down mentioned in that vid was to do with the console controller not being great for aiming as the mouse is. There is little chance that there will be cross-platform MP. The idea is interesting and generates talk (i.e marketing) but the balancing issues could add months to the release date. I can't see them wanting to push this game back any further. If there was cross-platform compatability Epic wouldn't be so daft as to nerf the PC game. This isn't EA we're dealing with here. Epic have got a great relationship with the gaming community and know how this would upset them (their customers). Quote:

Well in my comments I said that they'll be dumbing down the PC version and that will affect us, and the worse thing about that is that it's being done because of the limitations of console hardware not PC hardware. It's foolish to punish your original fanbase (who also made your games famous and your design company wealthy).
I'm not against the hoverboards myself, they sound fun (within reason). They've already said (Mark Rein at Epic) that if there was to be cross-platform functionality in MP between the PC and PS3, that they'd bump up Auto-Aim for the PS3 players and nerf the crazy moves that PC players can do using their mouse and keyboard so that there would be parity (of sorts) between the two platforms. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. I'd rather not have the option of playing thousands of prepubescent gaming smacktards and be able to keep the features that I enjoyed about the series. Epic is a solid company that does seem to care about its customers but they're also out to make a profit, just like any other company (EA included) so in that respect they're no Game Designer saints either. I'm a huge fan of the UT series and Cliff Blezinski in particular, but based on some of these planned changes to the game, I have much less interest in this upcoming game. I'll stick to BF2142, (which is shaping up nicely and based on my time with the Tuning Beta is in great shape compared to the release of BF2), as they're not dumbing their games down for their PC fans. (I'm also beginning to hold out at least a little bit of hope that Quake Wars may, after all, end up being good so that'll give me two great FPS games to play!) Just my thoughts...
