Lurking
Thumbs up God of War 3 - First Impressions

So, like Halo 3 for the XBOX, I gave in to the pressure and preordered one of the signature games for the PS3. I had never played the previous installments but I had a pretty good idea of what was going on. Kratos kills Ares and becomes the new god of war and everyone hates him, especially the other gods. Probably because he owes them money....its never really explained. Actually, everyone hates him because he brutally murders everything in sight. That remains unchanged in God of War 3.

The Greek pantheon of gods have gotten pretty thin on the ground. There aren't too many left by the beginning of the game and even less after about an hour in. We start with Kratos riding on the titan, Gaia, as the titans assault Mount Olympus. You learn some basic combat moves and game mechanics as you eventually do battle with Poseidon. I'll let you work out for yourselves how that turns out for the god of the sea. It wouldn't be a God of War game if Kratos didn't get the shaft somehow so I'll leave that for you to discover what happens.

The graphics are incredible. The environments are very atmospheric with lots going on in the background to distract you. This isn't more true than with the quicktime events that occur when you take out bosses. I died quite a few times because I was just watching what was going on. Speaking of death, dying isn't so bad. The checkpoints are frequent and you'll never find yourself going back too far. Save points, on the other hand, are not as numerous as I would like but its not a big complaint...just a complaint when its late at night and you've failed to stop at the last couple of saves because you couldn't put the controller down.

And now for your enjoyment, Kratos' music video as seen on X-Play. X-Play's God of War Music Video in High Definition ? G4tv.com

The backstory (for those that haven't played 1 & 2) is as follows (relatively quick synopsis):

****BIG SPOILERS AHEAD OF COURSE****

Kratos was a spartan general who fought in the name of Ares.
Facing defeat, he called upon Ares to lend him the power to defeat his foes.
Having won, and thus supercharged, he goes on a spree that ends up with him slaughtering his family (engineered by Ares).

This sets him on the path for eventual confrontation with Ares. Athena assists him as Ares, jealous of Zeus' favour of Athena, is sacking her city of Athens to demonstrate how superior he is. Kratos is tasked with recovering Pandora's box which would give him the power to kill Ares. (*big fight ensues, Kratos wins, end of God of War I).

GoW II starts with the gods plotting against Kratos as he has been a bit.. wrathful in the execution of his godly duties. He is deprived of his power which is transferred to the Colossus of Rhodes and given a blade that draws in power to combat it by Zeus. Completely divested of power but victorious over the Colossus, Kratos is then executed by Zeus.

At this point, Gaia (one of the titans) rez's him and sets him on the path to destroy Zeus by sending Kratos to the various titans to gain power and to eventually use the power of the Fates to go back to the point of betrayal and kill Zeus.

Kratos kills the 3 fates, goes back, defeats Zeus but Athena steps in to stop him and is slain while Zeus escapes.

At which point God of War II ends and sets the stage for the assault on Olympus and the final confrontation between the Titan's/Kratos and the Olympians.

ps. if you want to play through the games, there is a PS3 remastered version available fairly cheaply with both games on one disc.

The review of this game is very simple:

If you have a PS3 get this game,if you don't have a PS3 ,buy a PS3 and get this game.
If you belong to the people that don't have this game go find yourself a quiet corner and cry.

Here here.

I played the previous two games on Playstation and decided to buy them and play through again on the PS3.

That and the new game make for good gaming.

Don't make any sense of it , just enjoy it like watching fireworks thats what gaming is all about.

This link has the first 8 minutes of gameplay to get you pumped up.
I also recommend this for people that keep saying PC gaming looks better and has a future so they can safely STFU for ever.
