This topic has been blasted out of proportion.
No, multiplayer is still free as it has always been. The subscription is for their new "Call of Duty Elite" service which offers extras like stat tracking, prize tournaments and possibly map packs. Even then some of the features are free, they just haven't announced what is free and what is paid only. Either way it's still not something they should be encouraged doing, especially since Bungie provide a lot of the same service for free in the Halo games. Remember the good old days when developers added features to thank their loyal fans as opposed to constantly gouging them for more cash?
 I hope they don't follow the EA model where those who can afford to pay get access to in game gear without having to unlock it by playing.
