XBOX: E74 errors

More hardware problems plague Xbox 360 - Technology - smh.com.au

I'm not as up to date with the XBOX issues like most of you, but found this today.

Good news is they are extending the warranty to cover the E74 problem

Microsoft owned up today and announced that it was expanding its extended three-year warranty to cover the new "E74" errors, which it said were due to "general hardware failure".

I believe it's the scaler chip. There is much more full HD gaming on these days, so I think the hot-air-ventilated scaler chip is more prone to overheat. Or then it might be, that consoles went previously to RROD before one could see this happen. It's actually a very good design solution, awesome thing, a scaler chip, but lacks some cooling.

I won't provide a link here, as those places describe some instructions how to repair it, and if they are now extending the warranty, opening the xbox 360 would not be recommended I think.

They should have slightly changed the box design years ago. An extra fan+better place for the scaler could do the job?

Yeh, I got this error message while playing fall out 3.
I sent it back and it got fixed in about 2 weeks.
haven't got back into FO3 since lol

Yeah, as much as I trust MS support, this sounds like something that could be prevented with the RRoD repair kit being done before it happens, but Zaxvien is correct and it can be corrected fairly easily at home, but unlike the repair kit, maybe something you will leave to MS if you arent technically minded.
