I believe it's the scaler chip. There is much more full HD gaming on these days, so I think the hot-air-ventilated scaler chip is more prone to overheat. Or then it might be, that consoles went previously to RROD before one could see this happen. It's actually a very good design solution, awesome thing, a scaler chip, but lacks some cooling.
I won't provide a link here, as those places describe some instructions how to repair it, and if they are now extending the warranty, opening the xbox 360 would not be recommended I think.
They should have slightly changed the box design years ago. An extra fan+better place for the scaler could do the job?
