Wii: Has anybody Hacked their Wii

As above: Has anybody hacked their Wii... Not for any High Seas Chicanery but for the home-brew channel. I have avoided doing it for more than a year out of fears of bricking it but recently a rather easy soft mod has developed that is supposedly idiot proof (it must be 'cos I managed).

The main reason I went ahead was to get a media centre. I don't own a PS3 or X-box and was considering a purchase purely to stream media from my PC. I play all my games on PC so thought this was an expensive option (especially as I was eyeing off a new GFX card and PSU)

After a fairly painless process that took about 20 minutes I could wirelessly stream media from my PC to my Wii plus as an added bonus run emulators for games not yet on VC

once done add the "home brew browser" to the home brew channel to add a media player (I recommend MPlayer-CE) and while your at it add DOOM and QUAKE for a bit of fun...

If you dont have a classic controller avoid the BootLoader as this is unnecessary unless you want to back up your Wii discs for faster load times

another great home-brew app is DVDX which turns your Wii into a great little DVD player...
It seems strange that all these abilities are present in the hardware but Nintendo didn't see fit to implement them.

What if you wanted to do this and you have the 4.0 firmware?

the post( lifehacker, not mine) was made on august 28... when did 4.0 come out...I accidentally updated after installing and all is good. I did the hack about a week ago and updated firmware 20 mins later 29/8 I make no promises but the crew that put out this method seem vaguely/fairly confident that it is safe-ish (hows that for a definitive answer)

think it's pretty safe because it's all loaded of the sd card...I imagine you could un-install-remove sd and update when the next patch comes out

I hacked mine when the TP hack first came out, haven't had any problems with it. It seems the updates tend to target the installation methods rather than removing the homebrew channel itself.

I've done this to mine. Mainly because my kids are pathetic when it comes to taking care of discs. Luckily I did it before the latest update and turned off wiiconnect 24.

Same reason here. My 2 daughters wreck discs like they are going out of fashion so I put all our games on to a hard drive so they can run any of the games we have from here. No need to look for a disc, just boot the Wii, start the USB H/D channel and select their game.

The originals stay secure and un-scratched away from them.
