lol i just realised something real funny. Sony only just released a function for the PS3 which the xbox360 has had from day 1 (albeit a better version).
watching and recording TV through the console has always been available on the 360 through the media centre, it was just less accessible for those that dont know the basics of setting up home networks.

anyways, thats just my two cents (one cent after tax).....

But wouldn't you already need Digital TV for that (which I suppose most people have anyway)? Play TV's big selling point for me is that I don't have to buy a TV

you'll still need a TV for that anyways, PlayTV is pretty much just a digital box for the PS3.
i dl all my tv shows (cuz i dont like ads) and i usually just stream it from my pc to my 360 to watch it on the big screen. worked pretty well so far. the only thing i use my PS3 for is for a blu-ray player. once i get a blu-ray drive for my PC i wouldnt need the ps3 at all.

I believe Cheif uses a high quality PC monitor for his PS3, so the Play TV unit gives him access to Free to Air TV now

I've now got it set up and have the TV permanantly on AV1 - games, blurays and now TV all come through the PS3.

I must say, I'm quite impressed so far. I love having the ability to pause TV, go and get a snack/attend to the kids who should be sleeping/whatever and then come back and pick up where I left off. Being a little way behind also then allows me to skip through the ads - brilliant!

It's now got me thinking about setting up a file server for my home so I can get the full functionality out of the PS3, with music, photos etc.

Not cheap, but not ridiculously expensive either. I'd definitely recommend it.

actually, go to the PC component stores like MSY, if you know how to build and set up the file server, you can buy all the necessary gear fairly cheap. and if your buying multiple harddrives, you can even get bulk buy discounts, i got six 1.5TB western digital HDD for about $110 each after discount =]
